Research Safety Manager
Job Description This role is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing safety practices that ensure compliance with applicable regulations and support the safe execution of complex scientific and engineering work. The ideal candidate is a collaborative and hands-on leader with deep knowledge of research safety and DoD standards. They will contribute to continuous improvement efforts and foster a culture of safety innovation. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to: • Develop, implement, and maintain safety policies, programs, systems, procedures, educational tools and data management necessary to ensure the overall safety and health of employees and visitors. • Review experimental protocols and provide consultations in experimental design, operating procedures, and safe use of laboratory and shop equipment by evaluating the overall risk of the protocol or process. • Assist research team members with conducting job safety reviews and develop and implement effective safety plans. • Oversee and assist in identifying and mitigating high risk or high hazard situations involving hazardous materials or laboratory procedures. Apply specialized knowledge of OSHA, DoD, NFPA, ANSI, and other applicable federal, state, and local regulations to assist researchers in developing lab safety management plans and ensuring research areas meet applicable regulations and guidelines. • Investigate, develop, and provide specialized training and education to researchers regarding potential research hazards to prevent unsafe experimental conditions via technical guidance documents, online classes and tutorials, and other resource materials. • Review and support technical analysis of laboratory incidents and near misses. Perform incident investigations to identify root causes and work with researchers to identify controls and develop corrective action plans to prevent recurrence. The Principal Proposal Manager collaborates with UDRI technical and business development leads to develop the strategy, customer solutions, and win themes; establishes the proposal development timeline; builds proposal templates, outlines, and data calls; lead’s effective storyboarding team meetings; schedules and leads color team reviews and compliance reviews; position provides detailed guidance to proposal writers, contributors, and teammates; and manages all proposal documents. Additionally, the administrative associate, with limited supervision, will perform professional level administrative functions for the staff located in the facility. Duties will include, but are not limited to, completing onboarding tasks for new employees at the facility, planning and executing events, performing various administrative functions, managing conference rooms/reservations, and ordering and maintaining office & kitchen supplies. Requires professional interaction with contractors and customers and consistent discretion and good judgment throughout all activities. Skills and Requirements · Bachelor’s degree in a related field plus a minimum of six years of experience OR a master’s degree in a related field plus a minimum of five years of experience · Five years of experience in laboratory or research safety management, preferably within a DoD or federally funded environment · Strong working knowledge of safety standards · Experience supporting technical or research personnel in safe operations
