Research Intern -Cancer Biology (Dr. Shabnam Shalapour)
A Research Intern position is available in the Department of Cancer Biology with Dr. Shabnam Shalapour. Dr. Shalapour's Lab will offer several projects that the intern can choose to be involved with according to their specific needs and interest. The primary purpose of the intern position is to provide firsthand practical experience in the area of cancer research and insight into various science career opportunities. All duties and responsibilities are carried out in compliance with institutional policies, ethical research standards, and applicable federal and state regulations. *LEARNING OBJECTIVES* -The applicant will be introduced to microbiology and hepatocellular carcinoma. -Learn the role of diet in inducing dysbiosis and cancer. -Learn bacterial culture and 16S sequencing. -Learn to use RNA hybridization to measure bacteria in tissue (liver and colon). -Learn about in-vivo studies. -Learn how mice are used in our work and how to feed mice with different diets. -Learn how to measure weight and food intake. -Learn about immunohistochemistry. -Observe Sirius Red and Red Oil staining to define fibrosis and steatosis in liver. -Learn the isolation and analyses of immunoglobulin-coated bacteria using FACS. *ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS* Applicant must hold a bachelor's or master's degree Degree must have been obtained recently (within one year) Applicant must have previous research experience Applicants who hold a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree (e.g., M.D., D.V.M., M.B.B.S.) are not eligible Applicants associated with a home institution do not qualify Applicants in a clinical position, postdoctoral fellowship, or faculty position do not qualify Research Interns cannot change titles to another trainee title upon completion, exception applies if the trainee enrolls in a degree-seeking program Research Interns must be appointed for a minimum of 30 days and a maximum of six months. *ADDITIONAL APPLICATION INFORMATION* https://faculty.mdanderson.org/profiles/shabnam\_shalapour.html *POSITION INFORMATION* This position is onsite and unpaid.
