Professor Huiwang Ai’s laboratory (https://med.virginia.edu/ai-lab/) at the University of Virginia (UVA) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research position in synthetic chemistry and chemical biology. The Ai Lab specializes in developing fluorescent and bioluminescent biosensors. The successful candidate will contribute to this ongoing strength by focusing on the synthetic chemistry aspects of NIH-funded projects. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in synthetic chemistry, along with the interest and drive to learn biology and bridge the gap between chemistry and biology. The postdoctoral researcher will be expected to demonstrate creativity, work independently, collaborate effectively as part of a team, mentor junior trainees, and publish in reputable peer-reviewed journals.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: Doctoral degree
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Expertise in hands-on multi-step organic synthesis
Experience with spectroscopy techniques (e.g., NMR, LC-MS, UV-Vis)
Background in medicinal chemistry and/or chemical biology

Postdoctoral employment is temporary and is normally limited to an individual who has been awarded a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate within the previous five years and who will be involved in full-time research or scholarship at the University. Employment as a Postdoctoral Research Associate is viewed as training and is preparatory for a full-time academic or research career, is supervised by a senior scholar, and allows the appointee to publish the results of his/her research or scholarship during the training period.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
