Research Associate, The Beirne B. Carter Center for Immunology Research

At the University of Virginia, investigators in the Beirne B. Carter Center for Immunology Research (Carter Immunology Center) seek a fundamental understanding of how the immune system works. If they can determine, on the most basic level, how the immune system distinguishes between healthy and harmful cells, this could lead to revolutionary new treatments and cures based on controlling the immune response.     

 

Position Summary 

The Beirne B. Carter Immunology Research Center (CIC) at the University of Virginia’s (UVA) School of Medicine seeks a Research Associate to perform sophisticated experimental research in the areas of immune regulation of lung injury, recovery and chronic disease development following infection. The successful candidate will participate in a multiplicity of relevant lab projects and in writing study reports for the study sponsors, papers, and grant applications and is expected to develop research programs as time permits. The incumbent will also be expected to attend and participate in laboratory meetings and CIC-related seminars, as well as work with graduate students, technicians, fellows and collaborators in the laboratories involved in the project.

Responsibilities 

Full-time research and/or scholarship at the University 

Preparatory for a full-time academic or research career 

Supervised by a senior scholar; and allows the appointee to publish the results of his/her research or scholarship 

Strong time management and communication skills 

Ability to work both independently and as part of a team 

Assist with maintenance and upkeep of laboratory, as applicable 

In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned 

 

Note: Research Associate positions are for candidates who have obtained their PhD within the past 3 years. Candidates who have received or will receive their terminal degree between 2022 and 2025 are eligible to apply. 
 

Minimum Qualifications 

Education: Doctoral degree 
 

Preferred Qualifications 

The candidate should be highly motivated to develop new research avenues; and should have excellent written and oral communication skills.  

Intensive experience in small animal procedures, flow cytometry, molecular biology and immune cell purification and culture, etc.  

Experience in molecular biology, microscopy, cellular immunology, T cell biology, lung biology, murine models of disease, and human samples is preferred 

 

Physical Demands 

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs. 

 

Position Type & Work Location

This is a restricted position, which is dependent on funding and is contingent upon funding availability. 

This position is based in Charlottesville, VA, and must be performed fully on-site.
