Research Assistant I, Genetics


 

Job Summary

This individual is a research assistant (RA) who will work with a cutting-edge research and clinical team in the areas of translational genomics, risk communication, and health outcomes. The RA will play an integral role in supporting the G2P research and clinical team. The ideal candidate will be extremely organized and detail oriented, possess excellent writing, communication, and research skills, and be highly proficient in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Candidates who intend to apply to medical school, a genetic counseling program or similar pursuits within two years are encouraged to apply.


 

Qualifications


1. Overall:
•    Perform administrative and coordinating duties for innovative NIH-funded research projects.
•    Enter research and clinical data into secure databases.
•    Help maintain organization of research and clinical records.
•    Assist project managers by preparing and distributing meeting materials/handouts. 
•    Assist project managers in the development of research materials such as IRB and grant applications and surveys. 
•    Conduct internet and library research and construct well-written summaries.
•    Assist director and project managers with upkeep of Endnote library and journal and impact factor tracking.
•    Assist director and project mangers with manuscript and abstract preparation, submission, and publication tracking.
•    Assist project managers with study poster and presentation design. 
•    Assist with scheduling of virtual and in-person meetings, often across multiple time zones.
•    Assist project mangers with audiovisual technology at meetings. 

2. Clinical duties and responsibilities:
•    Assist the clinical team with patient intake and scheduling.
•    Assist with clinic administrative duties and billing with genetic counselor oversight as needed.

3. Study-specific duties and responsibilities:
The BabySeq2 Project: Genome Sequence-Based Screening for Childhood Risk and Newborn Illness 
•    Communicate directly with potential participants about the study and independently lead informed consent conversations.
•    Respond to questions from potential participants, including parents and pediatricians.
•    Communicate with study participants about ongoing study-related tasks including filling out study surveys, facilitating sample collections, and managing study compensation as appropriate.
•    Prepare and ship sample collection kits for all study recruitment sites.
•    Provide selected data and analysis on request for study collaborators, and help to determine which sources of data are available that fit each collaborator’s research questions.
•    Attend regular study meetings and report back to the team. 
•    Be responsible for all other organizational and administrative tasks related to our research participants, keeping the Project Manager informed of any issues or challenges and study successes.
•    Help to collect data for use in publications, posters and presentations. 
•    Assist Project Manager by preparing and distributing meeting materials/handouts and taking meeting minutes.
•    Assist with proofreading and developing documents (protocols, consent forms, surveys etc.).

4. Media:
•    Attend regular team media calls and take minutes.
•    Assist with developing and revising website content.
•    As instructed by the genetic counselor/PI, reach out to patients and research participants for media contact.
•    Present website, blog, and newsletter analytics for team review and propose and execute revisions to media strategies.

5. Development:
•    Attend regular team development calls and take minutes.
•    Conduct outreach and follow-up with individuals interested in supporting the program.
•    Create written and visual materials highlighting our opportunities for philanthropy.
•    Assist with distributing research program updates and donation requests annually.

6. Trainee Program:
•    Manage trainee application process, including reading applications, conducting interviews with candidates, and selecting candidates in collaboration with the research team.
•    Manage onboarding process for trainees rotating with the research program and act as a point person for trainee coordination and questions.
•    Maintain educational materials for trainees including a description of G2P research, a meeting calendar and a list of recommended readings and lectures.
•    Organize a series of weekly journal club sessions with presentations from G2P collaborators and team members.

7. Project-specific duties and responsibilities:
•    Assist director with organizing, preparing for, and conducting interviews with pioneers and leaders in genomics for a large-scale writing project.
•    Independently conduct literature reviews and synthesize findings in well-written summaries.
•    Assist Dr. Robert Green directly with high level special projects as needs arise (i.e. management of over 23,000 publications in our master EndNote Library for grant and academic publication purposes, assisting with the dissemination of research findings via conference presentations and other media engagements).
