Research Assistant, Pharmacology, Jones Lab
Job Description

The Research Assistant is involved in conducting in vivo studies in the Jones laboratory that assess the pharmacologic activity of compounds developed by the Warren Center for Neuroscience Drug Discovery (WCNDD) at Vanderbilt University. The principal function of this position is to provide support for ongoing research efforts related to the development of novel treatments for neurological and psychiatric diseases. This position reports directly to the Principal Investigator.


 Duties and Responsibilities
Key Functions and Expected Performance:

Under supervision, assists with in vivo evaluation of pharmacokinetic and behavioral effects of novel compounds in rodents

Performs in vivo neuropharmacology assays, including rodent circadian rhythm studies.

Performs neuroanatomical studies, including perfusions, cutting of brains, and histochemical/immunohistochemical staining on brain tissue

Maintains and genotypes colonies of genetically modified rodents

Maintains lab inventory

Maintains and troubleshoots laboratory equipment 

Analyzes results using computer-aided data analysis software 

Maintains accurate databases and experimental notebooks of results 

Communicates results in a timely fashion to an integrated team of multidisciplinary scientists 

Assists with general laboratory operation and inventory

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, or related is necessary1-2 years’ experience is necessary Previous laboratory experience is strongly preferred Previous scientific work with rodents is strongly preferred Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, as well as basic computer skills are strongly preferredExcellent organizational, oral, and written communication skills are necessary Attention to detail is necessary Team player is necessary
