CORE JOB SUMMARY
The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) delivers medical care to a wide variety of patients. The APRN also examines and treats patients independently and in autonomous collaboration with other health care professionals. Ensures proper illness and injury care and disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. May prescribe medications and order diagnostic tests. Advises patients about continuing care.

1. Performs and documents complete physical examinations and comprehensive health histories.
2. Functions independently to perform age-appropriate history and physical for patients.
3. Orders and interprets diagnostic and therapeutic tests relative to patient’s age-specific needs.
4. Prescribes appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment modalities
5. Implements interventions to support the patient to regain or maintain physiologic stability.
6. Assists with the provision of care in accordance with facility, state, and federal regulations.
7. Monitors the effectiveness of interventions.
8. Facilitates the patient’s transition within and between health care settings, e.g. admitting, transferring, and discharging patients.
9. Collaborates with multidisciplinary team members by making appropriate referrals.
10. Facilitates staff, patient and family decision making by providing educational tools.
11. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Master's degree in relevant field required

DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC JOB SUMMARY

The Myeloma Institute, part of Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center–University of Miami, South Florida’s only NCI-designated cancer center, has an exciting opportunity for a Research Advance Practice Registered Nurse, to work in sunny Miami UHealth Campuses. The SCCC Myeloma Institute is rapidly expanding its myeloma clinical trials portfolios under the direction of multiple world-renowned myeloma experts, clinical trialists, and physician scientists.  
 

DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC JOB FUNCTIONS

Assesses the physical and psychosocial status of clients by means of interview, health history, physical examination, and diagnostic studies. Recognizes deviations from normal in the physical assessment.  Works in collaboration with a physician in formulating treatment plans for health problems and follow-up. 

Writes prescriptions for medication, blood products based upon laboratory results, routine diagnostic and follow-up studies, therapeutic measures, and post-discharge care in accordance with written practice protocols. 

Requests written consultation from physicians and other healthcare professionals to ensure appropriate and quality patient care. 

Assess and follow consult patients when required and independently of physician when needed. 

Interprets and evaluates findings of studies/tests and intervenes accordingly. 

Advises collaborating physician of appropriate information regarding patient care and reports to the physician the actions provided to the patients. 

Evaluates the quality of care provided and recommends changes for improvement. 

Initiates appropriate actions to facilitate the implementation of therapeutic plans that are consistent with the continuing healthcare needs of the clients. 

Answers patient-related inquiries via telephone, Uchart In-basket , etc. 

Assists in the management of family dynamics and coping mechanisms during acute and chronic phases of patient care. 

Conducts or participates in multidisciplinary rounds and ensures appropriate and quality care for patients. 

 Performs patient triage and determines the urgency of physician’s evaluation. 

Provides symptom management for side effects related to oncologic treatment. 

Responds to medical and oncologic emergencies in CTU/clinics 

Assist with Peer-to-Peer authorizations and filling out medical forms for patients. 

Ensure that office runs smoothly and efficiently and correspond with referring physicians and patients to provide good care for patients. 

Perform bone marrow biopsies and other procedures as needed. 

Rotates with colleagues taking weekend and holiday call from CTU and Sylvester patients. 

Rotates with colleagues performing Hematology/Oncology consultations and inpatient care at UMH on a two-week basis and as per divisional needs 

Communicates daily with triage nurse regarding patients who need to be added to NP clinic for symptom management, evaluation, and treatment. 

Facilitates staff, patient and family decision making by providing educational tools. 

Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets. 

Ensure compliance with clinical study protocols by providing thorough review and documentation at each subject study visit  

Facilitate accrual of potential patients for clinical trial studies  

Participate in selection of clinical trial patients by documenting medical history to determine compliance with eligibility requirements  

Administer investigational medications and perform patient assessments during clinic visits to determine presence of adverse events; notifies attending of findings/issues  

Document medical data in patient chart to capture protocol requirements  

Coordinate patient care activities for standard of care patients along with patient care activities for patients enrolled in clinical trials for Multiple Myeloma  

Serve as primary liaison between patients and study team   

Educate patients and families regarding multiple myeloma, treatment, and clinical trials in general  

Direct nursing care, patient and study assessments, education, and patient support.   

Collaborate closely with members of the clinical research team across the institution to manage protocol patients and coordinate care  

Reports pertinent clinical findings and results to appropriate managing staff. 

Ensures compliance with institutional and government guidelines, regulations, and requirements.
