Job Title: Research and Development Technician Job Description We are seeking a Research and Development Technician to join our team in the Chicago, IL area. This role involves working closely with scientists to support multiple projects simultaneously. The technician will be responsible for weighing and mixing powders, preparing slurries for testing, and maintaining a clean and organized lab space. Additionally, the technician will update reports into an electronic lab notebook and work with small scale R&D equipment such as hot plates, stir plates, tube furnaces, and pH meters. Responsibilities + Collaborate with senior scientists to support multiple research projects. + Weigh and mix powders, and load them into the furnace. + Prepare slurries for testing. + Maintain a clean lab space, ensuring glassware, crucibles, and other equipment are properly cleaned. + Organize lab samples using a naming and labeling system for efficient storage. + Update reports in the electronic lab notebook. + Operate small scale R&D equipment, including hot plates, stir plates, tube furnaces, and pH meters. Essential Skills + Proficiency in using fume hood and glove box. + Experience with hazardous materials, including flammable, corrosive, toxic, water reactive substances, and powders. + A Bachelor of Science degree in Sciences. + Minimum of 2 years of experience working in a chemistry lab with exposure to various classes of hazards. + Competence in sample preparation handling acids, bases, and solvents. + Knowledge of research and development processes, including handling slurries, compressed gases, and gas cylinders. Additional Skills & Qualifications + Experience with batteries is a plus but not required. + Familiarity with compressed gases and gas cylinders. + Understanding safety protocols with powder materials. + Ability to follow instructions and solve problems. + Observant and capable of identifying abnormal observations in the lab. Work Environment The technician will work in the R&D lab, supporting senior scientists and managing multiple projects concurrently. Tasks may include making new powders under different conditions and preparing multiple slurries per shift. Samples typically weigh less than 1 kilogram. Successful performance may lead to opportunities to research new chemicals and materials, as well as training to develop new procedures alongside scientists.
