Department Summary
WellSpan York Hospital's 18 - Room OR boasts a close-knit team of Registered Nurses (RNs) and Surgical Technologists (STs) who have a special interest in neurosurgery. With over 100 years of combined healthcare experience, the team is adept at performing a variety of complex procedures, including VP shunts, brain and spinal stimulator insertions, emergent craniotomies, craniotomies for tumors, and both open and minimally invasive spinal fusions. The team enjoys a supportive work environment with the benefit of a guaranteed week of summer vacation, and holiday and weekend shifts are "on call" only, ensuring a balanced work-life schedule.
WellSpan's Intraprocedural Skills Execution (WISE) program provides formal learning opportunities to all perioperative Novice Nurse hires at WellSpan. Per AORN a Novice Perioperative RN is "any registered nurse who has not worked in the perioperative environment before, including a new graduate, an experienced nurse from another area of nursing, or a nurse with previous perioperative experience who has not maintained basic competency" (AORN, 2022). The program's goal is to assist in decreasing the theory-practice gap by providing foundational learning, increasing confidence, knowledge, and competence; while improving professional interdisciplinary communication; and nurse retention rates in the perioperative environment at WellSpan.
General Summary
Provides professional nursing in accordance with the principles of patient and family-centered care based on the nursing process and according to the clinical standards of the hospital. Acts as a primary nurse for patients on the unit. Coordinates care planning with other disciplines. May require specialized skills depending on unit assignment.

Additional Department Specific Expectations:
The successful candidate must have the ability to work independently as well as function within a team, assess patient and surgeon needs, prioritize needs, plan, and direct patient care within the operative suite, and possess the ability to handle stressful situations.Will function in both the circulating and scrub roles (nursing only)Gown and glove members of surgical team following aseptic techniquesMaintain the sterile field throughout the surgical procedurePrepare for the procedure by setting up the sterile table and preparing the instruments and supplies according to type of caseDrape the patient for the procedurePrepares rooms between procedures and after terminal cleaningMonitors and restocks suppliesAssists in maintaining correct count of instruments and surgical suppliesPrepares patient skin for surgery in accordance with hospital standardsMaintains and monitors sterile techniqueSupervises and assists with safe patient positioning Conducts and supervises proper care of instruments, supplies, and storage of equipmentQualifications
