CVP seeks a Registered Nurse to join our team in providing overnight nursing services for our Nation's Veterans at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC) in Houston, TX. This is an exciting opportunity to serve those who have served us while working in a variety of specialty units including Surgical Intensive Care Unit, Medical Intensive Care Unit, Cardiac Care Unit, Emergency Room, Medical/Surgical Units, Stepdown Unit, Spinal Cord Injury Unit, and Extended Care Unit. Night shift hours are 1930 to 0800.

Responsibilities Maintain patient/resident confidentiality and a safe patient/resident care environment, including compliance with requirements such as medication administration, patient/resident/family education, discharge process, restraint usage, and hazardous waste disposalProvide patient/resident-centered care by:Assessing the healthcare needs of patients/residents and maintaining or developing plans of care to meet interdisciplinary goalsIdentifying and acting on significant changes in the patient's/resident's health conditionCarrying out the plan of care by performing/assigning delegated tasksDocumenting pertinent data in the electronic patient/resident medical record using designated templatesCompleting nursing assessments within required timeframes and according to policyMeeting the emotional and spiritual needs of patients/residents and familiesPrioritizing and completing tasks during assigned night shiftUpdating patient/resident care plans and notifying physicians of condition changesPractice the VA core values: Integrity, Commitment, Advocacy, Respect, and Excellence (ICARE)Perform essential clinical tasks including:Head-to-toe patient assessmentsIV insertion and management of peripheral and central lines, including PICC linesMedication administration including IV medicationsCoordination of admission and discharge processesVital signs/hemodynamic monitoring including pain assessmentWound care including sterile and non-sterile dressing changesLaboratory specimen collection and handlingTracheostomy care and suctioning procedures (oral, nasogastric, deep)Care of patients requiring ventilator supportTube feeding administrationAssisting with routine urinary and bowel elimination needsEmergency response and assistanceProvide clinical oversight to Licensed Practical Nurses, Nursing Assistants, and Health TechniciansImplement Bar Code Medication Administration (BCMA) with 100% accuracyPerform risk assessments including Braden Scale, Fall Risk Assessment, and skin assessmentsDocument patient incidents through the Joint Patient Reporting System (JPRS)Clear all Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) clinical alerts daily Qualifications

Current, full, and unrestricted RN license from any U.S. State, Territory, or Commonwealth

Graduate of an accredited nursing program approved by the appropriate State agency and accredited by either the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)

Current BLS certification required

Current ACLS certification required for positions in SICU, MICU, CCU, ICU, Stepdown, and Emergency Room

Minimum of two years experience in Critical Care Nursing within the past five (5) years

Ability to successfully undergo a government background investigation (US Citizenship required)

Proficiency in spoken and written English

Basic computer skills and knowledge of electronic health records

Physical capability to perform the duties required, including lifting and performing under PMDB (Prevention and Management of Disruptive Behavior) protocols

Negative TB test within the past 12 months

Pre-employment drug screening

 

Shift

Night Shift: 1930 to 0800 Minimum requirement of three (3) 12-hour shifts per weekMinimum of 2 weekend shifts per month required
