About the Position:
The purpose of this position is to supervise the hospital after hours and act as the chief problem solver. This position serves as an extension of the Chief Nursing Officer and Hospital Administration.
This position provides nursing oversight, administrative oversight, manages, and be a resource for nursing personnel throughout the facility. Carry a state-issued cell phone, and be responsive to calls and voicemails while on duty. Provide first line leadership and management, as well as, direction to all direct care nursing staff on assigned shift. Serve as a resource and mentor to all nursing staff on their assigned shift. Promote nursing staff efficiency by oversight of assigned duties for nursing staff. Oversee the attainment and achievement of unit/Program/Hospital/Nursing Department goals. Collaborates with other leaders across the hospital. Applications of knowledge, expertise and experience in providing safe and effective patient care. Provide immediate crisis intervention in the milieu and response to all emergency situations. This position is responsible for assisting nursing staff with clinical direction/supervision of nursing staff, QA/PI activities and to ensure compliance in all areas, and interdisciplinary collaboration. This position is responsible for communicating pertinent information both up and down the chain of command as well as with other stakeholders of the nursing department including the administrator on call as needed. This position ensures nursing standards of care are implemented throughout all phases of the nursing process and delivery of services. This position provides direct skilled patient care when needed to cover breaks or for emergencies.
This position works in tandem with other staff assigned to the shift. This position works within multiple levels of patient care and is coordinated across a continuum. Adheres to and references the professional codes of conduct, regulatory agency standards, the Nurse Practice Act, State Board of Nursing, professional codes of ethics, and scope of discipline practice guides to ensure various levels of nursing personnel function within their scope of practice. Responsible for communicating, implementing, and clarifying nursing policies at the shift level. This position assists with implementing performance improvements at the shift level along with procedures at the shift level. This position participates in and prepares nursing personnel for onsite surveys, monitors documentation, and ensures the quality of care is rendered according to the State Board of Nursing, The Joint Commission, Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment the Colorado Department of Personnel Rules and Regulations, and any other accrediting or certifying agencies that the hospital recognizes and follows.
Responsibilities also include the provision of safe, appropriate nursing care on the shift by effective deployment of nursing staff resources through collaboration with the staffing office, ensuring there are enough staff including those with licenses on each shift, coordination and timely statistical reporting of incidents, acuity, QA/PI activities, implementation of department policies and standards of care, responsible for the education of the nursing staff on their shift(s) and retention of nursing staff on their shift(s).
Duties in this position include:
Management/Clinical Direction & Supervision:
+ Performs as the campus-wide (House) nursing supervisor while on duty.
+ Is responsible for the direction, supervision and management of all Nursing staff of the assigned shift, campus wide, while working in conjunction with nursing leadership.
+ Performs as the assigned Nursing Administrator on-call (NAOC).
+ Provides oversight of nursing staff performance by direct observation.
+ This is accomplished by rounding on each unit during their shift.
+ Is responsible to ensure all nursing assignments and duties are completed and in compliance with CMHHIP policies and psychiatric and medical nursing standards, licensure requirements and governing bodies.
+ Assures emergency response skills are maintained, and training offered as needed.
+ Provides oversight and acts as a resource for staffing schedules by utilizing knowledge of acuity, and pool staff to maximize the quality of care given to unit patients on the shift.
+ Addresses identified sub-standard performance issues and/or policy violations at the lowest level and communicates these to the Staffing Office Nurse Manager within appropriate time frames.
+ Immediately communicates all reportable occurrences to the Administrator On-Call (AOC), the appointing authority (ADON), and assure that nursing staff have documented the occurrence on the appropriate forms and in the health record.
+ For severe occurrences such as a patient death, this position will notify the above authorities and also report to the DON.
+ Conducts Code Zero drills on assigned shifts and evaluates performance.
+ Responds to all Code Zero drills and medical emergencies,
+ Reviews all charting and assists with charting if needed, including the incident report related to the incident
+ Stays on unit and assists until all is completed correctly unless called to another emergency.
+ Provides follow up after return to normal operations if needed.
+ Responds to all episodes of Seclusion and Restraint.
+ Provides real-time audit of documentation and does not leave until documentation corrections are addressed.
+ Completes random Nextel phone audit to ensure charge RN is carrying the unit Nextel
+ Calls and gets a report for all admissions in the absence of the clinic nurse.
QA/PI & Nursing Trackers:
+ This position directs actions to maximize the quality of patient care at the shift level by directing and coordinating the timely reporting of statistical and quality assurance data.
+ This position reviews patient occurrences and responds to performance issues of assigned staff/shift.
+ Performs audits of nursing documentation to identify and address staff deficiencies as directed by the Unit Nurse Manager.
+ Also, collaborates with non-nursing personnel to address related performance issues identified by audit, in conjunction with the Unit Nurse Manager.
Staff Development/ Competencies:
+ Performs department annual competencies check offs working in collaboration with Staff Education, Nurse Educators, etc
+ This position implements actions to maximize the productivity of assigned nursing personnel by mentoring, training, leadership, and providing feedback through evaluation and in the moment coaching.
+ Manages, communicates, and demonstrates expectations for required competencies.
+ Identifies and provides needed training to assigned staff.
+ Promotes staff development and training by reinforcing staff compliance with hospital wide mandatory training. Conduct Code Zero drills on assigned shifts and evaluates the post-drill performance.
+ Provides corrective training for substandard performance in the moment.
+ This position maintains nursing standards of care for their assigned shift by creating and maintaining processes to communicate and follow up with assigned staff so that standards are kept in compliance.
+ This position must adhere to CDHS Code of Conduct and CMHHIP Code of Ethics.
+ Maintains current knowledge of NEC minutes, new policies, standards, updates, and literature related to nursing and specialty areas is maintained and communicated to subordinates.
Patient Care/ Nursing Care:
+ This position is responsible for the nursing care provided on assigned shifts and maintenance of a safe, secure and therapeutic environment.
+ This position promptly responds to patient’s psychiatric and/or medical issues, participates in Trauma Informed Care initiatives and understands and promotes its principles.
+ Implements audits and reviews nursing care provided on the shift.
+ This is accomplished through providing follow up to ensure the standard of care is being followed; ie., documentation for seclusion or seclusion/restraint monitoring, proper procedure for respiratory services, oxygen and oxygen equipment, laboratory services after hours, and obtaining data from the AED.
+ Participates and ensures staff correctly identify patients prior to administration of medications, treatments, blood testing, handing out diet trays, or starting an invasive procedure.
+ Follows and maintains Infection Control standards and regulations.
+ This position evaluates concerns related to the nursing care plan by assessing, identifying, planning, implementing, evaluating, and revising the plan of care given based on clinical judgment.
+ This position advocates for patient rights regarding any mental health legal issues and adheres to 27-65 statute and CMHHIP policies and procedures in this regard.
+ This position provides emergent interventions in critical situations as necessary.
+ This position can be utilized to provide coverage as needed on the shift.
Supervision:
+ This position serves as an individual contributor who may explain work processes and train others and serve as a resource or guide by advising others on how to use processes within a system or as a member of a collaborative problem-solving team.
+ This position will be a co-planner and able to assist with performance reviews.
+ Coaches and mentor staff within the department.
+ Contributes to and foster a cohesive team and positive work environment.
+ Removes barriers once identified and ensure employees have the tools they need to succeed

Minimum Qualifications:
Current, valid licensure as a Registered Nurse from the Colorado Board of Nursing or any state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC)
AND
Three years (3) of professional experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position.
Substitution:
Appropriate education will substitute for up to two (2) years of the required experience on a year-for-year basis

+ Seize, hold, control or subdue violent or assaultive persons and defend oneself or others to prevent injury
+ Demonstrate body agility, strength of all four limbs and the ability to walk and climb stairs consistently
+ Work in situations involving assaultive behavior, physical control of another person and/or restraint situations;
+ Ability to read and comprehend the English language; effectively and fluently communicates in English, both verbally and in writing
+ Work in an environment with fluctuating noise and temperature (hot and cold) which may include working outdoors in inclement weather and/or concrete floor/wall work settings
+ Willing and able to travel
+ 2-step TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire;
+ Annual influenza vaccination.
+ Shift Work- May be required to work evening or weekend shifts, holidays, voluntary or mandatory overtime both in the clinic, or on patient units throughout CMHIP
