Echocardiograph technicians are a very specific kind of diagnostic medical sonographer dealing with the heart. Echo technicians use ultrasound devices and other imaging tools that use sound waves to create images of the heart. They inspect the chambers and walls of the heart as well as the valves. An echocardiogram can be administered externally on a patient's chest but can also be conducted by placing a tube down a patient's esophagus to get closer to the heart internally. By joining our team as a Registered Echo Technician, you will oversee the quality assessment not only of the equipment but also of our caregivers, which in turn helps aid in a positive patient experience. This role will provide you with plenty of hands-on learning and can act as a steppingstone to other careers within the field at Cleveland Clinic.

A caregiver in this position works day/evening/night/weekend shifts from 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. with on-call requirements.

This role requires caregivers work at multiple locations, including Martin North, Martin South, Tradition, Saint Lucie West and the Family Health Center, based on staffing needs.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

Perform echocardiograms, stress tests, stress echoes and Dobutamine stress echo. 

Assist cardiologists with transesophageal echocardiograms. 

Consult with cardiologists for interpretation of test results.  

Maintain records of testing documentation. 

Provide daily account of patient's charge requisition with appropriate ICD9 codes. 

Provide training and acts as a resource for echocardiogram students, residents, and physicians. 

Provide testing for add-on emergency patients. 

Always maintain complete and up-to-date documentation and files, including products and service quotes. 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

Graduate from a two-year Cardiovascular Technology program  

Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) registry status from the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS)

OR Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) from the Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI)

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross 

Strong interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients, families, physicians, and other caregivers  

Ability to empathize with patients and families 

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

Five years of experience in echo and vascular ultrasound 

Physical Requirements:

Interact with patients, families, physicians and other health care workers.

Good hand coordination for positioning of probe and equipment.

Good vision to analyze computer screens and VCR recordings to diagnose test results.

Use good judgment in stressful emergency situations.

Adequate mathematics skills to maintain accurate record and report.

Physical Duties: Moderate lifting and positioning of patients.

Moderate pushing and pulling of equipment.

Working Conditions: 100% air-conditioned.

Moderate risk of exposure to blood or air-borne pathogens

Personal Protective Equipment:

Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required for procedures.
