Job Overview
The Refrigeration Manager is responsible for directing the activities of all Albertsons, Tom Thumb, and Randalls Southern Division in‑house refrigeration mechanics. This role oversees training, service operations, maintenance, and compliance for refrigeration, HVAC, and EMS systems across all retail locations. The position also manages relationships with Authorized Service Providers (ASPs), oversees critical systems such as EAM/Corrigo, Trakref, and VMS, and ensures rapid response to emergency and on‑call situations.
Job Responsibilities & Accountabilities Training & Development Train all in‑house refrigeration mechanics as new equipment, materials, and processes are introduced. Provide direction and recommendations during pre‑construction refrigeration surveys for stores scheduled for remodel, new construction, or expansion. Operational Leadership Direct all in‑house and third‑party Refrigeration Mechanics across all areas of refrigeration and HVAC. Support the Energy Manager in improving system performance and reducing energy consumption and operating costs. Ensure proper application, handling, and documentation of refrigerants in accordance with Federal, State, Local regulations and company policy. Complete post‑opening refrigeration walk‑throughs for all new or remodeled stores. Manage the dispatch function to ensure timely service and immediate emergency response. Oversee fleet management for service trucks assigned to in‑house mechanics. Service Providers, Contracts & Vendor Management Manage service contracts necessary to maintain overall store conditions and standards. Select and maintain relationships with Authorized Service Providers (ASPs) to support 24/7/365 store operations. Coordinate, approve, and track all external vendor services supporting HVAC, refrigeration, EMS, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and in‑store equipment repair or replacement. Preventative Maintenance & Compliance Identify, coordinate, and assign Preventative Maintenance (PM) projects, cleaning schedules, and waste reduction initiatives. Maintain accurate tracking and reporting of Division EPA and CARB refrigeration data; train in‑house mechanics to ensure compliance. Maintain all corporate PM due dates for work performed by the in‑house team. Ensure completion, accuracy, and regulatory compliance for all required Form 2 documentation. Technical Support & Problem Solving Provide daily support for store‑level refrigeration, HVAC concerns, and operational needs. Develop solutions for parts with long lead times to ensure uninterrupted store operations. Communicate any emergency issues to the Director, especially those creating shrink risk, safety concerns, loss of sales, or production impacts. Manage overtime for the in‑house team, ensuring pre‑approval for emergency OT. Scheduling & Labor Management Develop and manage on‑call schedules, coordinating coverage when technicians are unavailable. Job Requirements(Experience, Education, Certifications, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities)
Education & Experience College or Trade School Degree in refrigeration, electrical, or facility maintenance preferred; equivalent work experience accepted. Extensive knowledge of supermarket refrigeration systems required. Working knowledge of refrigeration controls such as ComTrol, Danfoss, CPC, and others. Experience in HVAC maintenance and repair required. Skills & Abilities Ability to accept after‑hours and emergency service calls as needed. Strong leadership ability and experience supervising technicians or service personnel. Ability to motivate and collaborate effectively with others. Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to interact effectively with diverse groups in person and over the phone. Basic computer proficiency, including Word and Excel. Ability to perform administrative tasks with accuracy, maintain mental alertness, and manage frequent interruptions. Other Requirements Ability to travel, including occasional overnight travel. Physical Environment & Working Conditions Up to 80% travel may be required. Regular after‑hours emergency response expected. Work performed both in temperature‑controlled office environments and exterior ambient conditions. Extended sitting at computer terminals may be required. Use of calculators, computers, telephones, PDA devices, and office equipment throughout the workday. Must be able to access all facility areas including roofs, basements, crawl spaces, mechanical rooms, and elevated platforms. Physical tasks may include ladder climbing, stooping, bending, twisting, reaching, and navigating tight spaces.
