Detailed Overview
The Recreation Coordinator provides services to the South Asian Day Program by developing, implementing, evaluating and carrying out activities that will meet activation, life skills, recreational, social and cultural needs of the client, primarily related to South Asian diaspora. Assists clients with activities of daily living and provides supervision of designated staff as required.
Responsibilities
Develops, plans, implements, evaluates, prepares a calendar of events and participates in a variety of recreational and social activities in Punjabi for South Asian Day Program clients such as arts and crafts, sports, music, mental aerobics, woodworking, cooking, gardening and exercises designed to meet the social, emotional, intellectual, spiritual and cultural needs and interests of clients. Instructs participants in techniques and any required adaptations of related activities to meet the needs of the client.Assists with client intake by performing duties such as obtaining client information and completing documentation required. Schedules and confirms clients for appointments and maintains waiting lists. Works with clients to establish eligibility and appropriateness for activity and consults with caregivers and nursing staff to determine the activities based on client''s needs as required. Receives client/caregiver feedback, inquiries and complaints, and responds as required.Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of recreation and social programs and recommends changes to the Recreation Therapist and/or Manager.Participates in interdisciplinary team meetings and provides verbal and written progress reports on the emotional well-being and social behaviour of clients; identifies and recommends community and facility resources that may be of additional interest or need of the client.Observes clients and reports unsafe conditions and behavioural, physical and/or cognitive changes. Promotes client participation in activities and provides feedback regarding the performance and progress of clients.Works with other service providers (e.g. Nurses) to review activity and/or client objectives and goals and liaises with caregivers and families to promote client participation.Accompanies clients on scheduled outings related to the South Asian Day Program.Assists clients with activities of daily living as required, such as feeding, lifts and transfers, toileting and grooming.Supervises Activity Workers as required by performing duties such as assigning work, providing feedback and evaluation, determining training requirements, orienting new staff, and maintaining timekeeping and attendance records. Resolves staffing programs, including calling in staff to ensure appropriate staffing levels.Maintains a safe environment for clients, caregivers, volunteers, and staff by following established emergency and safety practices and procedures; identifies programs related to client safety and care standards and informs the Manager or designate.Completes and maintains related records and documentation such as statistics, progress reports, activity plans and client activity profiles. Coordinates inventory of equipment, tools and materials and makes purchase recommendations.Assists in the preparation of program budget, monitors expenditures, and assists with required financial documentation.Schedules work assignments and provides direction to designated volunteers during activity programs including demonstrating relevant techniques; determines volunteer resources required and participates in the recruitment, selection and training of volunteers.Set up furnishings, equipment and supplies for activities; cleans/sterilizes in accordance with established procedures.Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
Completion of a recognized 2-year recreation program, plus two years of recent, related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Certificates in First Aid and CPR.
