Rail and Transit Department Leader
The Rail & Transit Department Leader position serves as a critical leadership role within the Transportation market, reporting to the Director of Operations within the Mid-Atlantic Geography. The Department Leader will be responsible for the growth locally and globally with our Global Delivery Centers within the Rail & Transit Market and lead a team of Group Leaders and Managers of Projects. The individual will also work closely with the Group Leaders, Manager of Projects and Project Managers to draw upon their collaboration and organizational skills to provide mentorship, coaching and leadership to support workload management, and connect resources throughout Jacobs, inclusive of our Global Integrated Design (GID) team. Additionally, will be responsible for promoting inclusion and diversity, working to ensure that all staff are given meaningful and equitable opportunities to progress their careers within Jacobs. Key Attributes • High level of emotional intelligence/team builder and inspirational leadership • Adept at interpersonal relationship building, conflict resolution, and leading diverse teams • Innovative and solutions-oriented thinker • Leadership and project delivery experience in the market • Must be able to articulate a clear vision and direction and possess strong social, networking, and communication skills (both internal and external) • Portfolio performance and strong business acumen Key Responsibilities You’ll serve as a people leader and will be accountable and responsible for the following activities: • Supervise and provide staff leadership, management, and mentorship to the Group Leaders (GLs) for the Rail & Transit market department • Serve as key technical expert and resource on projects within the Rail & Transit disciplines • Manage staff performance and help talent grow and develop, utilizing the e3 process and succession planning for staff within the Rail & Transit market department • The Department Leader has a key role in partnership with the Director of Operations for the PU to deliver the operational performance and client relationships for the relevant Market within the PU. The Department Leader is accountable for the Rail & Transit growth within the PU/geography working with the Director of Operations to deliver against the plan to achieve GM goals and manage G&A. • Steward career development - basic skill development and sustainment, growth opportunities and skill refinement • Coach, develop and mentor staff to deliver superior results collectively and individually • Coordinate across the department, geography and Business Units to optimize resource management and provide opportunities for staff growth • Coordinate with Project Delivery teams to cascade processes, procedures, and other information to staff within Rail & Transit market and monitor progress. • Drive quality control for all projects within Rail & Transit • Facilitate GID delivery for projects within Rail & Transit. Coordinate with Group Leaders and PM/MOP to ensure GID engagement where applicable. • Build team culture in concert within overall performance unit and company goals/strategy, and communicate with aligned staff (i.e., regular team meetings and 1:1 meetings, etc.) • Work with the Group Leaders, Project Managers and Director of Operations to achieve staff retention goals • Track and manage staff assignments and total billable hours on a weekly basis with their Group Leaders. Partner with the PMs, and other project execution staff, to deliver on project needs and contractual terms for the staff aligned to the Rail & Transit market department • Coordinate Rail & Transit backlog with Director, aligned MOPs, and CAMs/CSLs. Coordinate pipeline with sales/MOP to determine future workload and identify gaps. • Coordinate with other Rail & Transit Department Leaders and Regional Market Solutions Leader across the Region and within BIA. • Act as hiring manager where appropriate for new staff locally and with our Global Design Centers, working in concert with others around established hiring plans; including helping our business achieve TogetherBeyond goals and integrates new hires • Work in partnership with Human Resource (HR) partner and Talent Acquisition (TA) on recruiting and hiring of talent, talent retention, driving Inclusion and Diversity, and exemplifying and leading Jacobs Culture of caring throughout the Market department • Promote BeyondZero, quality, and safety programs to create an incident- and injury-free culture • Report market progress toward performance goals on a regular basis. • Approve time sheets and expense reports for aligned staff. Coordinate, monitor, and approve Rail & Transit expenditures, such as specific assets, conference attendance, and committee expenses. The final candidate could be located in Washington, D.C., Philadelphia or Pittsburgh, PA or Baltimore, MD. #LM1236 • Bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering or architecture • Substantial experience in the rail and transit environment and demonstrated experience leading project delivery • Previous experience driving quality control for rail and transit projects • Previous experience with managing portfolio performance and possess strong business acumen • Demonstrated aptitude, ability, and capacity to lead and build a team • Strong social, communication, planning, and organizational skills • Understanding of the holistic role between Director of Operations, Group Leaders, Managers of Projects, Client Account Managers, and Market Solutions to lead and grow a sustainable team to meet business objectives • Ability to lead through inclusion, inspiration, and innovation Jacobs is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
