ResponsibilitiesLead and execute R&D projects focusing on developing new specialty chemical additives, coatings, resins, foam auxiliaries, and polymer-related products.Manage, mentor, and develop a team of chemists, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.Serve as the resident chemistry expert, providing timely and decisive technical guidance to Quality Control, Production, Environmental Health & Safety (EHS), and other internal stakeholders.Drive experimental programs at both lab and pilot scales, utilizing a hands-on approach and a deep understanding of experimental design (DOE) to achieve project objectives efficiently.Collaborate directly with customers to understand their unique challenges, translate theoretical chemical concepts into practical applications, and develop tailored solutions.Evaluate and optimize existing chemical processes, focusing on batch chemical manufacturing, to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance product performance.Assess and manage contract manufacturing relationships, ensuring alignment between chemical formulations and external capabilities.Champion intellectual property development, contributing to patent applications and supporting the successful launch of new products.Prioritize and manage multiple projects concurrently, demonstrating strong organizational skills and the ability to adapt to evolving business needs.
Essential SkillsExpertise in Chemistry, Formulation, Research & Development, Polymer Chemistry, Organic Chemistry.Experience in Quality Control, Analytical Chemistry, Wet Chemistry, Chemical Raw Materials Testing, and Scale Up.Proficiency in handling Polyurethane, Adhesives.
Additional Skills & QualificationsPh.D. in Synthetic Organic Chemistry or Polymer Chemistry from an accredited institution.5-10 years of progressive experience in research and development within the specialty chemicals industry.Experience in managing chemists, with a minimum of 5 years in a leadership role.Proof of innovation evidenced by multiple patents, successful product launches, or significant contributions to commercialized products.Strong understanding of batch chemical processes and their practical applications.
Work Environment
The role involves overseeing a team of two individuals in an environment where around 500 products are manufactured across multiple areas such as textiles and coatings. The day-to-day responsibilities are dynamic and decision-making skills are essential. The role requires handling hazardous chemicals and providing insight to Quality Control queries. You will lead your own projects, be involved in patenting new technologies, and participate in discussions on joint ventures in new fields. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $100000.00 - $135000.00/yr.
Piedmont Chemical offers a years of service/retention bonus for employees. Piedmont Chemical offers 401K to employees that have 5% match and maxes out at 10% match. Will provide more detailed benefits package upon request.
