The Information Technology Services (ITS) department at the University of Virginia (UVA) provides the foundational technology, applications, services, and infrastructure that enable the University’s teaching, research, and administrative functions. The IT Project Management Office (IT PMO) provides Program and Project Management, and Business Analyst support for the CIO Project Portfolio and is currently seeking a Project Manager.
Responsibilities
As a Project Manager in the IT PMO, you will lead high-impact IT initiatives from the CIO Project Portfolio in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, working closely with teams across UVA ITS and the broader university community to deliver strategic outcomes, including:
Collaborate with project sponsors to define objectives, scope, and deliverables for assigned projects. Develop charters, plans and detailed schedules in alignment with the IT Project Management Framework.
Successfully drive cross-functional teams to deliver IT solutions (e.g., enterprise applications, information security, university infrastructure) on time, within budget, and with a high level of quality.
Within the ITS Project Framework, apply waterfall, hybrid, or agile methodologies as appropriate. Ensure that all deliverables adhere to established quality, accessibility, and compliance standards.
Establish realistic project schedules and set schedule baselines that accurately incorporate scope, resource availability, and risk factors. Ensure each task has clearly defined ownership, deadlines, and dependencies. Monitor progress consistently, address deviations promptly, and apply corrective measures to maintain alignment with the timeline.
Identify, track, and mitigate risks, manage issues, and document decisions and actions to ensure projects continue as planned. Oversee structured change control processes, incorporating stakeholder input and maintaining institutional compliance.
Develop and manage project budgets, when required. Track expenditures, ensuring compliance with financial policies. Monitor and analyze spending trends, identify variances and implement corrective actions to stay within budget.
Using standardized formats, produce timely, transparent and accurate reporting of project status and project health to relevant stakeholders.
The PM will work consultatively to help put in place the necessary people, processes, and tools while coaching team members as needed, to optimize the efficiency of the team.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: High School Diploma, Bachelor's Degree Preferred
Experience: Three years relevant experience, including:
Foundational knowledge of PMI-based project management (e.g., PMBOK 7th Ed. Principles, Domains, Models, Methods) and is strongly motivated to deepen expertise through formal methodologies and certifications such as PMP, CAPM, PMI-ACP, or hybrid approaches.Familiarity with IT concepts related to service management, applications, and infrastructure (e.g., networks, servers, end points, cloud solutions, security)Strong interpersonal skills including mentoring and team buildingStrong analytical, planning, and organizational skills with an ability to manage competing demandsExcellent oral and written communications skills and experience interacting with and presenting to stakeholders at all levels including the executive level.Ability to work effectively in a team and adapt to changing priorities.Preferred Certifications

We support work-life balance and a flexible work environment. This position is eligible to be hybrid, however regular, weekly in-office time is required to establish relationships with the ITS sponsor group. The position is based at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA
This is a restricted position with a two-year term. The successful candidate will pass a background check. This position will not sponsor applications for immigration. This is a full-time, exempt level position with UVa benefits. Employees benefits package highlights include:
