Project Archaeologist
Stantec is seeking a Project Archaeologist with demonstrated field experience in Maine and the greater New England region. Primary responsibilities are leading fieldwork to include archaeological assessments and Phase I, II, and III excavations, and managing field staff primarily in New England. The successful applicant will work closely with Project Managers/Principal Investigators on field projects and writing technical reports. Our cultural resources team provides Section 106/NEPA analyses, technical studies for renewable energy, and project permitting for a wide variety of private and federal, state, and local government clients. Key Responsibilities - Project archaeologist/field director for cultural resource investigations for a variety of clients and sectors including work in utilities, transportation, renewable energy, and local governments. - Provide supervision and technical direction to field staff. - Supervise activities of all field personnel and assign, direct, and evaluate their work. Maintain daily paperwork, field maps, notes, photographs, vehicles, and field equipment - Application of working knowledge of goals and strategies in archaeological assessments and Phase I, II, and III archaeological investigations - Keeping Project Manager apprised of progress and/or problems, as necessary - Contributor to archaeological assessment and Phase I, II, and III reports, as the field schedule allows - Travel within the New England region is required; additional travel outside of the region possible - Participate in Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) Policies, Procedures, Standards and Guidelines in the execution of all work. Your Capabilities and Credentials - Demonstrated field experience in Maine and surrounding states including experience with identifying material culture typical to the region. - At least one (1) season of a field school - Experience leading and conducting all phases of cultural resource investigations and producing/managing daily field notes and/or field records. - Ability to effectively supervise entire project field team - Self-awareness of technical and/or professional abilities and the ability to determine when assistance from senior staff is needed. - Ability to make knowledgeable decisions in the field in the absence of a Project Manager. - Ability to provide written and verbal direction to field staff during project execution. - Ability to convey safety information to field staff. - Demonstrated team player with the ability to work independently and take initiative. - Ability to use field data collection equipment such as GPS and Environment Systems Research Institute (ESRI) Collector and Survey 1-2-3. - Ability and willingness to work under varied weather conditions - Good driving record and valid driver’s license required. - Excellent oral and written communications skills Education and Experience - Master’s degree in anthropology or archaeology or closely related field - Meets the qualifications as described in the Secretary of Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards for Archeology and Historic Preservation. - Registered Professional Archaeologist (RPA) or qualifications that meet requirements to become an RPA. - Minimum 2-5 years of field supervisory experience in cultural resource management and archaeological compliance survey primarily in Maine and surrounding New England states. - Professional writing, problem solving, and communication skills.
