The Construction Project Accountant is responsible for managing the financial aspects of assigned construction projects from start to finish. This role ensures accurate project costing, timely billing, effective budget tracking, compliance with contract terms, and proactive communication with project managers and stakeholders. The ideal candidate has strong analytical skills, construction accounting experience, and proficiency with job‑cost accounting systems.
Key ResponsibilitiesProject Financial ManagementMaintain job cost records for assigned projects, ensuring accuracy and proper coding.Track project budgets, commitments, change orders, and cost‑to‑complete forecasts.Reconcile project costs between field reporting, subcontractor invoices, and the general ledger.Prepare and analyze Work‑In‑Progress (WIP) reports monthly.Billing & ReceivablesPrepare and submit monthly progress billings (e.g., AIA G702/G703).Monitor accounts receivable aging and follow up on outstanding invoices.Ensure billings comply with contract terms (T&M, lump sum, GMP, cost‑plus).Process change order billing and track pending and approved changes.Subcontractor & Vendor ManagementReview and process subcontractor pay applications, including lien waivers and insurance compliance.Verify labor, material, and equipment charges for accuracy and correct job coding.Coordinate with procurement to match POs with invoices.Financial ReportingPrepare monthly project financial summaries for leadership and project managers.Assist with annual audits, budget preparation, and financial statement support schedules.Monitor cash flow impacts related to projects.Compliance & DocumentationMaintain documentation for all project‑related financial activity.Ensure compliance with GAAP, company policies, and contract requirements.Support compliance with tax requirements, including sales/use tax on materials.QualificationsEducation & ExperienceBachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.3–5+ years of accounting experience, preferably in construction.Strong knowledge of job‑costing and project accounting practices.Experience with construction accounting software (e.g., Sage 300/Timberline, Vista/Viewpoint, Procore Financials, QuickBooks Contractor Edition).Skills & CompetenciesSolid understanding of construction billing formats and contract types.Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.High attention to detail and accuracy.Ability to meet deadlines in a fast‑paced environment.Strong communication and collaboration skills.Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.Preferred QualificationsExperience with AIA billing and certified payroll.Familiarity with lien laws and construction compliance documentation.Knowledge of retention tracking and multi‑state tax requirements.Job Type & LocationThis is a Permanent position based out of Saint Louis, MO.
