JSG is a professional search firm seeking a Progressive Die – Tool & Die Maker for one of our top clients in the western Chicago suburbs.
Job Summary The Progressive Die- Tool & Die Maker position will be responsible for design interpretation, manufacturing of replacement details, and repair and maintenance of precision progressive stamping dies. This role requires expertise in complex tooling, adherence to tight tolerances, and strict compliance with IATF 16949 automotive quality standards. Essential Tasks Collaborating with the tool room team to ensure all drawings and program designs are received and processed correctly. Interpret complex blueprints, CAD files, and engineering specifications to plan, design, and build progressive dies from concept to completion. Perform all phases of die work, including building, altering, and repairing intricate progressive dies for high-speed stamping operations. Operate and maintain a variety of manual and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine tools, including mills, lathes, surface grinders, and Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) equipment. Conduct die try-outs and diagnose complex tooling issues during production, implementing quick and effective repairs to minimize downtime. Perform preventative maintenance (PM) and conditioning on dies to ensure optimal performance and longevity. Inspect and verify parts and tooling using precision measurement instruments, such as micrometers, calipers, and gauges, to maintain dimensional accuracy and conformance to specifications. Collaborate with engineering, quality, and production teams to troubleshoot problems and implement continuous improvements related to tooling. Ensure all tooling management processes, including design, fabrication, verification, and maintenance, comply with IATF 16949 requirements. Maintain accurate and detailed documentation of die modifications, maintenance logs, and repair history. Work with various materials, including tool steels and carbide, and have a strong understanding of heat-treating principles. Complying with all safety regulations as defined in safety guidelines for the manufacturing floor. Understanding and following SPECIAL CUSTOMER REQUIREMENTS. Understanding and following the non-conforming material guidelines. Understanding and following quality alerts for known product defects or potential defects. Understanding and following label requirements. Understanding and following 5s requirements. Understanding and following the Layered Process Audits. Understanding and following any rework or repair instructions. Understanding and following the Calibration System for measuring equipment. Any other duties as required. Knowledge Production and Processing — Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods. Mathematical—Analytical and numerical skills: ability to perform mathematical calculations (add, subtract, multiply, divide, count) in different units of measurement. Mechanical— Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, maintenance, and blueprint Interpretation. Administrative — Knowledge of administrative and office procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, and completing forms. Skills / Abilities Language — English reading, and writing. Troubleshooting — Determining causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it. Technology— Computer and CNC machine operating and programming skills. Communication— Conveying and understanding information. Documenting/Recording Information — Recording information in written form. Time management — Managing one’s time and prioritize based on urgency. Deductive Reasoning — The ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense.
