Primary Purpose: The primary purpose of this position is to assist in the delivery of the first-year undergraduate program in the College of Engineering by taking a leading role in the management of the administrative tasks associated with the program. In addition, this position will assist with instruction by providing support for technology used for hybrid delivery and managing student interactions in very large classrooms. The position will also support Quality Assurance Research and other research activities within the program.
Nature of Work: This position will report directly to the Director of the Ron & Jane Graham School of Professional Development (SoPD). However, this position will be an important member of the team responsible for supporting and delivering the Engineering portion of the first-year undergraduate engineering and the General Engineering (GE) programs.
This position will provide administrative support of the first-year engineering program at the program level as well as for specific courses within the program and other GE courses offered through the SoPD. The position responsibilities will also extend to logistical support for quality assurance studies and the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) within the program. Opportunities exist for the incumbent to keep up with evolving technology in educational software and learning management systems.
The work will be varied and of high volume. The position requires advanced organization and communication skills as well as the ability to maintain significant levels of confidentially. The incumbent may have opportunities to provide input in the development of policy and lead the evolution of processes.
Typical Duties or Accountabilities:
Manage many of the first-year program’s administrative tasks.
This includes activities such as
tracking and managing student workload, contributing to TA training, manage Help Sessions, organize and run Star Cup, perform student fails analysis, create and maintain meeting minutes for various committees, set up SLEQ evaluations, manage grade appeals, administer academic honesty cases to support instructors, and coordinate AES assessments.Support individual instructors and courses.
This includes activities such as
assisting natural science and math instructors meet the requirements of adapting to the first-year engineering program model; providing classroom support for GE courses including; managing recording and livestreaming technology, providing classroom management assistance in large rooms, and printing exams and scanning completed exams.Support program improvement within the first-year engineering program.
This includes activities such as
assisting with collection and reporting of accreditation date; assisting in recruiting participants for quality assurance and SoTL studies; gathering data from such studies; and analyzing data from such studies.Provide general and technical program support as required
This includes activities such as
booking rooms; maintaining Mobius and the CBA calculator; ensuring both university and college policies and procedures related to key accountabilities are adhered to; providing service and advice to students and other staff; and promoting the success of the program by responding to special needs.Regularly engage in career development and growth opportunities
This includes activities such as
attending lectures, seminars, workshops, and training courses on relevant topics such as learning management systems, other educational software, and lab equipment; and attending lectures, seminars, workshops, and training courses on teaching and learning, staff supervision, and course organization/coordination.Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering is desired.
Experience: Having experience administering academic programs or courses is strongly preferred. Experience instructing students and/or in running instructional labs is an asset. Knowledge of software tools relevant to our First Year Engineering program, such as MATLAB, Canvas, Crowdmark, Mobius, Python, MS Office, and AutoCAD, would be an asset. Previous experience administering or working with academic honesty programs is a significant advantage.
