Job Description

 

San Bernardino Valley College (SBVC) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position in Chemistry. SBVC is dedicated to serving a diverse student population and is committed to hiring faculty who can contribute to the mission of providing innovative programs and cohesive student services to support a diverse learning community, preparing students for transfer, workforce entry, and economic development while fostering an environment of belonging and continuous improvement.

 

SBVC is seeking applicants who are committed to advancing equity and who reflect the diverse racial, ethnic, cultural, gender, sexual orientation, political, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds of the San Bernardino community. The successful candidate will be expected to integrate equity-minded practices in all areas of their work, including instruction, professional development, and college service.

 

Representative Duties: 

The following duties are typical of those performed by faculty in this classification. Other duties may be assigned as appropriate.

 

• Provide instruction in Chemistry courses, including lectures and laboratories in introductory and general chemistry, in accordance with approved course outlines and departmental standards.

• Incorporate equitable, inclusive, and culturally responsive teaching practices that promote the success of all students.

• Collaborate with faculty colleagues on curriculum development, program review, and the design of laboratory experiences.

• Assess and evaluate Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) to support continuous improvement in teaching and learning.

• Maintain accurate student records and submit required documentation in a timely manner.

• Maintain scheduled office hours to support and advise students.

• Actively participate in departmental, divisional, and college governance, including committee service and other forms of shared governance.

• Engage in professional development activities, including training in multiple instructional modalities (online, hybrid, in-person).

• Contribute to fostering an inclusive, collegial, and student-centered campus environment.

 

Qualifications

• Master's degree in Chemistry OR 

• Bachelor's degree in chemistry or biochemistry AND Master's in biochemistry, chemical engineering, chemical physics, physics, molecular biology or geochemistry

 

OR the equivalent 

 

and

 

• Experience that indicates a sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic,cultural,disability,andethnicbackgroundsofcommunitycollegestudents, including those with physical and learning disabilities.

 

Desired Qualifications: 

• Two (2) or more years' related college-level teaching experience.

• Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to clearly communicate organic chemistry topics, at an appropriate level for STEM majors, to community college students.

• Demonstrated experience collaborating with colleagues and contributing to programs that support teaching, learning, and service for a diverse student population.

• Demonstrated experience using multiple teaching methods to support students with diverse learning styles, as evidenced by course syllabi, lesson plans, or student feedback.

Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to occasionally lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight up to 30 pounds; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

 

Vision:

 

See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents; and to operate assigned equipment.

 

Hearing:

 

Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.

 

Employment Requirements

 

The person selected for hire will be required to complete the following pre-employment requirements:

 

• Submit to and successfully pass DOJ live scan/fingerprinting. Cost of live-scan services to be borne by candidate.

• Sealed official transcript(s) in envelope from institution or electronic copies emailed directly from institution (for positions with higher education requirement)

• Tuberculosis (TB) risk assessment.

• Employment verification(s) (for salary placement on faculty salary schedule). The salary posted in the job listing reflects the range from the starting minimum to the maximum placement, which is determined based on the candidate's education and experience once the position is offered and the salary placement paperwork is submitted to the Office of Human Resources.
