Production Manager – Weld Shop (Rolling Stock Production)

Position Overview:

We are seeking a Production Manager for our Weld department. This role is crucial to daily operations of the weld shop, ensuring alignment with production goals, safety standards, and quality expectations. It involves supervising personnel, managing budgets, and driving continuous improvement across welding processes, training, and automation. The position also serves as a key liaison with engineering, quality, and maintenance teams to resolve technical issues and support strategic initiatives.


What your day may look like:

Lead and manage daily operations of the weld shop, ensuring alignment with production schedules and quality standards.Supervise weld shop supervisors and weld specialists; oversee workforce planning, shift coverage, and performance management.Ensure compliance with safety protocols, environmental regulations, and internal EHS policies.Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on weld quality, throughput, and cost efficiency.Collaborate with engineering, quality, and maintenance teams to resolve technical issues and optimize welding processes.Oversee training and certification programs for welders, including AWS and EN standards.Manage departmental budgets, including labor, consumables, and capital investments.Support integration of automation and robotic welding systems; contribute to specification and commissioning of new equipment.Lead root cause analysis and corrective actions for weld-related defects and safety incidents.Represent the weld shop in cross-functional meetings and project reviews; provide updates on KPIs and strategic initiatives.


What will make you successful in this role:

Minimum 8–10 years of experience in welding operations, with at least 8 years in a leadership role.Demonstrated experience managing cross-cultural teams and fostering an inclusive, high-performance work environment.Strong knowledge of welding techniques, metallurgy, and fabrication standards.Proven ability to lead teams through change, including automation upgrades and capacity expansions.Experience in budget planning, cost control, and ROI analysis for equipment investments and process changes.Ability to forecast resource needs and align departmental goals with broader operational strategies.Strong decision-making skills under pressure, including authority to halt production for safety or quality concerns.Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.


We would be impressed if you have:

AWS CWI or equivalent certification preferred; Lean Six Sigma is a plus.Familiarity with rolling stock manufacturing requirements.Degree in Weld Engineering, Engineering or equivalent.

This position in located in Sacramento, CA. The salary range for this position is $119,900-$162,000 and the annual incentive target is 10% of the base salary. The actual wage offered may be lower or higher depending on budget and candidate experience, knowledge, skills, qualifications and premium geographic location.
