Product Sustainability & Materials engineer
Glasgow or Reading (Home/Office Hybrid role)

Our Opportunity
We are seeking a Product Environmental and Materials Engineer within the Thales UK Optronics & Missile Electronics (OME) business.
You will directly contribute to the on-going development of the Land, Naval, Air and Autonomy products and systems.
You will provide support to the Safety and Technical authorities, the product safety team and the wider organisation by undertaking both environmental and materials analysis for our products.
This covers all elements of environmental and materials analysis (such as energy use, materials, contaminants) and some safety analysis as required.
Evaluate and approve materials to meet regulatory and sustainability requirements
Ensure compliance with environmental and chemical regulations (e.g. REACH, RoHS, UK/EU legislation)Work with suppliers to obtain, review and manage material declarations and chemical compositionApply Eco-design principles to support sustainable product development from concept through end-of-life.
Conduct and support Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) to assess environmental impacts of materials and products
Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, procurement and quality teams
You will identify to the Safety Authority any concerns regarding the safety of a product during manufacture, or the application of policies and processes, providing environmental & materials analysis in support of products.
You can choose to be based at Glasgow or Reading Green Park. The role allows for a mix of home and office working.
About You
Background in Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry or a related disciplineStrong knowledge and understanding of environmental regulation and chemical complianceProven experience in a materials engineering, materials compliance or sustainability-focused roleExperience with Life Cycle Analysis and sustainability assessments – not essential Understanding of chemistry and materials propertiesAdvanced Excel skills for data analysis and reportingKnowledge of polymers, metals or composite materialsExperience conducting Risk and COSHH assessmentsEngineering lifecycle experienceBuild positive and effective relationships with stakeholders, including team members and customersEffective communication, interpersonal and influencing skills; able to influence product design authorities successfullyTenacity and resilience when faced with resistance or challengesAttention to detailWillingness to share knowledge, develop others and learnYou may have had some useful exposure to eco/environmental design, or materials analysis though not essential.Connect with Fiona Tal, Talent Acquisition Partner #LI-FT1 who is eager to explore together with you this exciting opportunity.
This role will require SC Clearance. It would be advantageous if currently held, however, if not currently held, it is a requirement that the successful applicant will undergo, achieve, and maintain SC Clearance. Please visit the UKSV website for further guidance.
To be eligible for full SC, you generally need to have resided in the UK for the last 5 years. In some circumstances, a minimum of 3 years’ residence in the UK over the last 5 years may be accepted, with additional overseas checks.
