Product Manager (Observability)
IBM
**Introduction**
We are looking for a Product Manager to join the Instana Observability team, focusing on instrumentation for applications and infrastructure, the foundation of how Instana collects and analyzes observability data.
In this role, you will define and drive the roadmap for tracing and metrics instrumentation across a broad range of technologies, including programming languages, middleware, cloud‑native environments, and managed cloud services.
You’ll collaborate with engineering, design, and research teams to ensure Instana continues to deliver best‑in‑class, automated observability for modern, distributed systems.
**Your role and responsibilities**
* Own the product strategy and roadmap for application and infrastructure instrumentation (traces and metrics).
* Define requirements and prioritize support for new technologies (languages, frameworks, middleware, cloud services).
* Work closely with engineering to evolve Instana’s agent and OpenTelemetry‑based instrumentation stack.
* Ensure seamless integration of new data sources into Instana’s end‑to‑end observability workflows.
* Collaborate with product, marketing, and customer success teams to communicate new capabilities and gather feedback.
* Stay ahead of industry trends in observability, APM, and cloud‑native monitoring.
**Required technical and professional expertise**
* ~2 years of experience in Product Management or a related technical role (e.g., technical product owner, software engineering, DevOps).
* Understanding observability fundamentals — metrics, traces, logs, and distributed tracing concepts.
* Familiarity with cloud‑native technologies (Kubernetes, containers, microservices) and managed cloud services (AWS, Azure, GCP).
* Strong collaboration and communication skills across cross‑functional teams.
* Ability to balance technical depth with customer and business priorities.
**Preferred technical and professional experience**
* Technical background (e.g., degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field).
* Hands‑on experience with instrumentation frameworks such as OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, or custom SDKs.
* Knowledge of one or more programming languages (Java, Python, Go, Node.js, etc.).
* Experience with APM or observability tools.
