Position Summary:
The Scientist position requires an experienced professional with demonstrated knowledge in microbiology and/or molecular biology laboratory operations. Process knowledge related to microbial mitigation strategies is desirable. The purpose of this position is to provide hands-on laboratory support to ADM operations across bench, pilot, and plant scales as well as technical expertise in a service-oriented role. This position will work across all business units to troubleshoot, develop, validate, and optimize operations where biological impact is significant.
Responsibilities:Adhere to established safety workflows across all operationsPerform method development, qualification, validation, and support tech transfers of new technologiesPerform molecular diagnostics and analysis techniques using technologies such as IR and MALDI-TOF Biotypers, flow cytometry, and other rapid screening instrumentationExecute microbiological experiments such as viability assays, selective/differential analyses, isolate identification, and other methodologies as appropriateWork collaboratively with lab technicians, scientists, engineers, and leadership to efficiently transfer knowledge through cross-training and development & continuous improvement of SOPsMaintain laboratory equipment through in-house and vendor-scheduled proceduresProvide plant support and troubleshooting to operations teamConsolidate, interpret, and present data, conclusions, and recommendationsParticipate where appropriate as an individual contributor and/or team leader on matrix projects within technical area of expertiseWork collaboratively within R&D and across ADM business units to maximize value creation and efficient use of resourcesEnsure documentation completion, training resource availability, and drive project execution while maintaining safe work environmentWork with additional subject matter experts and managers to ensure technical work done is with sound, scientific methods to provide high quality information in a resource efficient mannerEducation:Bachelor’s Degree in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, or related field with 2-3 years of microbiological experience, preferably in a regulated industry; or Master’s Degree with 0-1 years related experienceExperience:Technical background in the areas of microbiology and molecular/cellular biology (knowledge of relevant instrumentation and culture-based techniques preferred)Demonstrated knowledge and experience with microbiology laboratory operations, BSL-2 regulations, and food applications / ingredient manufacturingSkills:Understanding of laboratory equipment including, but not limited to robotic liquid handlers, RT PCR systems, phenotypic, proteotypic, and genotypic identification methodologies, stomachers, centrifuges, and air samplersKnowledge of controls for microbial growthAble to function within a matrix project management environment, often providing feedback and input on experimental designGood understanding of data analysis, concepts, and principlesRequirements:Potential weekend or holiday coverage on a rotating basis, dependent on critical needsCandidate will need to work within established company and laboratory safety guidelinesWillingness to spend time in plant areas, tolerate extreme temperatures, walk long distances, stand, climb stairs and ladders, and move through close spacesCore Competencies:Communication, scientific aptitude, integrity, mechanical aptitude, problem solving, ability to work independently as well as in a diverse team, detail oriented, and safety commitment.
