The Position

A healthier future. It’s what drives us to innovate. To continuously advance science and ensure everyone has access to the healthcare they need today and for generations to come. Creating a world where we all have more time with the people we love.

That’s what makes us Roche.

In Roche’s Pharmaceutical Research and Early Development organization (pRED), we make transformative medicines for patients in order to tackle some of the world’s toughest unmet healthcare needs. At pRED, we are united by our mission to transform science into medicines. Together, we create a culture defined by curiosity, responsibility and humility, where our talented people are empowered and inspired to bring forward extraordinary life-changing innovation at speed.

This position is located in Preclinical Chemistry, Manufacturing, and Controls (pCMC), a department within the synthetic molecule research organization in pRED Therapeutic Modalities, where we pave, in a diverse, ambitious and innovative environment, the path to bring drug candidates from early research into development.

The opportunity

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated (Senior) Scientist to join our oligonucleotides process development group.  In this role, you will have the unique opportunity to shape the future direction of our oligonucleotide manufacturing capabilities, by establishing and optimizing innovative synthetic processes for our oligonucleotides pipeline. Therefore we are looking for a creative and hands-on Scientist for this laboratory-focused position where you will have the autonomy to ideate, design, and execute experiments in order to solve complex chemical challenges with innovative and alternative technologies such as biocatalysis and solution phase oligonucleotide synthesis.

Your main tasks and responsibilities will include:

Scout, evaluate, and implement new and innovative technologies such as biocatalysis and solution phase synthesis methodologies to enhance process efficiency and product quality.

Independently design, plan, and execute laboratory experiments to develop and optimize novel synthetic routes for oligonucleotide APIs.

Analyze and interpret analytical data to understand reaction performance.

Maintain a detailed and accurate record of all experimental work in an electronic lab notebook and author technical reports, summaries, and presentations.

Work effectively within a cross-functional environment, collaborating with colleagues from different departments to ensure seamless project progression.

Who you are:

You hold a PhD in Organic Chemistry or a closely related discipline. Alternatively, Master’s degree and at least three years of industrial experience in a process development group focused on oligonucleotide synthesis can also be considered.

You have proven ability to independently design, execute, and interpret complex laboratory experiments. A proactive, results-driven mindset combined with excellent problem-solving skills is essential.

Strong communication skills and fluency in English, both written and spoken, are required. Direct, hands-on experience in the synthesis, purification, and analysis of oligonucleotides is considered a strong advantage.

You thrive in a dynamic, inclusive environment which gives you full accountability for your own contributions and development. You have a keen interest in continuously building a personal network. You are resourceful and flexible in problem solving and in working in a collaborative and inclusive manner.

Ready to take the next step? We'd love to hear from you. Apply now to explore this exciting opportunity!
