The job
We are seeking a highly skilled Principal Software Engineer to join our Monitoring and Control Business within the operations BU of Aveva.
The ideal candidate will be responsible for developing and enhancing the driver development subsystem for our Enterprise SCADA product. This role involves troubleshooting customer-reported issues from deployed versions of the driver framework while also designing and implementing new features. The position requires deep expertise in C++ and systems-level programming, with a strong background in Windows-based debugging and troubleshooting.
Key responsibilities
Develop and enhance the driver development subsystem of System Platform, our flagship Enterprise SCADA product.
Troubleshoot and resolve customer-reported issues on existing driver framework versions.
Implement new features for the driver framework to support emerging industrial automation needs.
Work with industrial communication protocols, including:
Siemens S7Plus protocol
Allen Bradley CIP protocol
REST and SOAP-based protocols
MQTT protocol (Sparkplug and JSON-based)
Extensive experience with OPC UA
Conduct system-level programming to optimize performance and reliability.
Utilize debugging and performance analysis tools such as Wireshark, Debug Diag, and Perfmon.
Collaborate with geographically distributed teams and work across multiple stakeholders including Technical Support, End Customers, and Internal Engineering Teams.
Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers.
Essential requirements
15+ years of real-time experience in C++ development.
15+ years of experience in systems-level programming.
Strong expertise in troubleshooting and debugging Windows-based applications.
Proficiency in Wireshark, Debug Diag, and Perfmon for debugging and performance analysis.
Experience working with communication protocols used in industrial automation.
Excellent problem-solving skills with a proactive approach to debugging complex issues.
Desired skills and competencies
Experience developing platform-agnostic C++ code.
Exposure to Linux development environments.
Proficiency in C# and working with web servers.
Familiarity with gRPC and microservices architecture.
Ability to work in a fast-paced and collaborative environment with cross-functional teams.
Behavioural Skills:
Strong team player with the ability to work across geographically distributed teams.
Excellent communication skills for working with Technical Support, End Customers, and other stakeholders.
Ability to handle multiple responsibilities and prioritize tasks effectively.
