Principal Technical Program Manager, EC2 Demand and Forecasting
Amazon.com
The EC2 Demand and Forecasting team is looking for a Technical Program Manager to facilitate planning EC2 infrastructure. This role will require the candidate to work with internal customers to optimize their consumption of EC2 instances. Specifically, this individual will impact the overall Amazon CapEx plan by: working with the hundreds of AWS services & SDO teams to adopt different/new instances, creating new metrics to monitor the efficiency of team's use of EC2, and partnering with SDE teams in different orgs to decrease qualification times. This role works on a team of several other planners who divide the software teams into portfolios which allows the candidate to dive deep into the technical aspects of AWS products. The ideal candidate is one who has worked at the intersection of software engineering teams, finance, and supply chains; who can understand constraints from each group and work between worlds to create strategic plans to ensure EC2’s continued growth while optimizing for long-term efficiency.
Key job responsibilities
- Influencing other engineering organizations to make changes to their infrastructure roadmap.
- Matching supply of EC2 positions and server materials from supply chain partners to the types of demand that fit within those positions
- Quickly responding to changes in the roadmap based on supply availability, customer demand, or hardware engineering constraints.
A day in the life
Our team operates on a bi-monthly planning cycle, so we expect to spend ~2 weeks creating a new plan, ~2 weeks adjusting the plan based on feedback from our downstream partners, and ~4 weeks monitoring, tuning, and evaluating the plan. In addition, we expect this role to work closely with SDE teams that are concurrently developing new software to help increase planning effectiveness.
About the team
The EC2 Demand and Forecasting team is responsible for building forecasts/plans that drive almost all of the CapEx spend for AWS, and will directly impact the purchase of $billions of server components, data center power, and networking equipment. The team is primarily composed of TPMs but we are the primary customer of several SDE teams in EC2 and AWS Infrastructure who software to improve the planning process.
