Principal MEMS Technologist

Collins Aerospace is one of the world’s largest suppliers of technologically advanced aerospace and defence products. With facilities located in both Plymouth and Bristol, we design and manufacture products for control, navigation and guidance for surface and air applications in the global aerospace and defence markets. Our world leading products include the innovative MEMS based IMUs and the digital terrain reference navigation system, TERPROM®. Our aggressive growth plan includes development and extension of our current technologies into wider markets including civil aircraft applications.

The Technology Development team plays a critical role in the delivery of state of the art MEMS sensors used in these products. This multidisciplinary team is focused on the further development of our world class inertial MEMS technology portfolio and is driving innovation in both sensor design and processing techniques. We are seeking enthusiastic and talented individuals to work within our highly experienced team in this exciting technology area.

Technologist

Candidates do not require prior experience of working in an R&D environment, however, experience within an academic or industrial environment will strengthen the application. Applicants should have the aptitude to successfully conduct original and innovative research, with the support and guidance from the experienced team they will be part of. The ability to comprehend and assimilate key aspects of the multiple disciplines encompassed within MEMS technology is also critical. The position provides the opportunity to gain valuable experience and expertise at the cutting edge of MEMS inertial sensor development.

What you will develop: Planning and execution experimental investigationsAnalysis of performance data and interpretation of resultsAssist with project planning and delivery of technical work packagesTracking and reporting of technical status on allocated tasksGeneration and configuration of relevant documents (e.g. target performance specs.)Participation in brainstorming, problem solving and ideas generation events

 Your background: Bachelors or Masters degree in Physics, Mechanical or Electrical / Electronic Engineering or other relevant subjectPost-graduate degree not essential; however, nature of role will benefit from thisExperience in use of data analysis tools (MATLAB) and understanding of data gathering and analysisDemonstrable ability to innovate and generate ideas

What we are looking for: Basic understanding of MEMS technology and fabrication processesExperience of working in an R&D environment AND/OR Laboratory testing environment.Experience in the design, operation or use of MEMS inertial sensorsFamiliarity with Multi-Physics FEA tools (ANSYS / COMSOL / Coventor)Practical ability to set up, debug and test breadboard electronics circuits for proof-of-concept and prototype developmentUnderstanding of control systems fundamentals and using MATLAB / SimulinkKnowledge of inertial sensor principles, parameters and applicationsUnderstanding of transducer technologies and techniquesDemonstrated ability to design, layout, and analyze using RF/microwave tools such as Keysight ADS, NI Microwave Office, Cadence Virtuouso, SPICE, or SystemVueDemonstrated ability to troubleshoot problems while integrating components or subassembliesDemonstrated ability to direct PCB layout or mechanical drafting toolExperience in generating test plans, leading verification campaigns, writing test reports, and briefing customersDemonstrated ability to do own PCB layout using CR-5000 or other drafting toolExperience in integrating RF components/assemblies with digital components including microprocessors, FPGAs, or programmable logic devices.Experience in using transceiver components: filters, low-noise amplifiers, OpAmp circuits, frequency synthesizers
