At Collins Aerospace Optronics, we develop and build high precision optical systems for space, airborne, simulator and body-worn environments. As a Mechanical Engineer at Optronics, you will be responsible for the design, analysis, prototyping, and testing of precision optical and visual display systems. You will collaborate closely with optical, electrical, systems and other mechanical engineers to deliver robust, manufacturable, and high-performance optical assemblies and visual display systems. The candidate will apply knowledge of mechanical design and fabrication processes, such as design-to-cost, component selection, engineering procurement, and engineering lab processes to the design and development of flight and simulation & training hardware. The candidate will also contribute to bid and proposal efforts. The candidate is expected to coach, lead, review, and delegate work to lower-level professionals. The candidate may be assigned mechanical engineering project lead role or asked to manage moderately sized projects.
What You Will Do:
Design and develop mechanical structures for optical components, systems, and instrumentsPerform detailed CAD modeling, tolerance analysis, and thermal/structural simulationsCollaborate with optical engineers to ensure alignment and stability of optical systemsLead mechanical design reviews and interface with vendors and manufacturing partnersLead or support prototype assembly, integration, and environmental testingDesign, development and analysis of custom tooling, fixtures and manufacturing aidsDocument designs and generate drawings for fabrication and assemblyTroubleshoot and resolve mechanical and optomechanical issues in prototypes and productsLead or support technical research and contribute to continuous process improvement activitiesCollaborate closely with Operations and Quality personnel on New Product Introduction and Non-Standard ProductionQualifications You Must Have:
Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 8 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years of experience or in absence of a degree, 12 years of relevant experienceExperience in optomechanical design and developmentProficient in 3D CAD software including SolidWorks, Creo, or similarExperience with optical mounts, alignment techniques, and athermal designFamiliarity with FEA tools (i.e. ANSYS) for thermal and structural analysisStrong understanding of GD&T, DFM/DFA principlesExcellent problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skillsQualifications We Prefer:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or related fieldExperience with spaceborne, airborne, or ruggedized optical systemsOpto-mechanical, electro-mechanical or visual displays experienceFamiliarity with cleanroom practices and optical assembly techniquesProficient with hand tools and light power tools.8+ years of experience with Solidworks or Creo8+ years of experience in optomechanical design and analysisDo you want to be a part of something bigger? The salary range for this role is 112,000 USD - 224,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels.
