Principal Machine Learning Engineer

The Red Hat OpenShift AI team is looking for a Principal Machine Learning Engineer with Kubernetes and MLOps (Machine Learning Operations) experience to join our rapidly growing engineering team. In this role, you will provide key leadership to a talented team of engineers, contributing directly to projects such as Kubeflow, Ray and MLFlow with a primary focus on delivering fine tuning capabilities across the Red Hat AI product portfolio. We’re looking for an individual contributor who is open to leading by example to promote a positive supporting team culture, collaborating closely with other developers, stakeholders and cross-functional teams. Embracing an upstream first mentality, you should have a passion for working in open-source communities and for developing solutions that integrate Red Hat, open-source, and partner technologies into a cohesive platform. **What you will do** + Play a key leadership role within a talented group of engineers, working closely with staff engineers and architects to outline a vision and roadmap for the training and experimentation stack in **OpenShift AI** + Work closely with the AI Innovation team to help deliver **LLM training** , continual learning and reinforcement learning techniques across our product portfolio + Embrace an upstream first mindset to help our teams become more influential in MLOps focused communities such as **Kubeflow** + Liaise with stakeholder groups and cross-functional teams to deliver new product features + Ensure non-functional requirements including security, resiliency, and maintainability are met + Use **CI/CD best practices** to deliver solutions as productization efforts into **OpenShift AI** + Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement by sharing recommendations and technical knowledge with team members + Collaborate with product management, other engineering and cross-functional teams to analyze and clarify business requirements + Communicate effectively to stakeholders and team members to ensure proper visibility of development efforts + Give thoughtful and prompt code reviews + Represent **OpenShift AI** in external engagements including industry events, customer meetings, and open source communities + Mentor, influence, and coach a distributed team of engineers **What you will bring** + Advanced experience in **Python and Go** + Advanced experience developing applications in **Kubernetes, OpenShift,** or other **cloud-native technologies** + Ability to quickly learn, adapt and guide others on using new tools and technologies + Proven ability to innovate and a passion for staying at the forefront of technology. + Experience with distributed systems (especially those that run on Kubernetes) and **troubleshooting** them + Autonomous work ethic, thriving in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. + Experience providing technical leadership in a global team and delivering on a vision + Excellent written and verbal communication skills + A willingness to proactively **utilize AI-assisted development tools** such as **Cursor** and **Claude Code** for code generation, auto-completion, and intelligent suggestions to accelerate development cycles and enhance code quality. + Open to exploring and experimenting with emerging **AI technologies** relevant to software development, proactively identifying opportunities to incorporate new AI capabilities into existing workflows and tooling **The following will be considered a plus:** + While a Bachelor’s degree or higher in computer science or a related discipline is valued, we prioritize practical experience and technical prowess + Understanding of how **Open Source** communities work + Experience working with **upstream communities** + Familiarity or experience with the **MLOps lifecycle** , with an emphasis on **model training** + Experience writing **Kubernetes/OpenShift controllers and operators** + Experience **writing SDKs in Python** or other languages **About Red Hat** Red Hat (https://www.redhat.com/) is the world’s leading provider of enterprise open source (https://www.redhat.com/en/about/open-source) software solutions, using a community-powered approach to deliver high-performing Linux, cloud, container, and Kubernetes technologies.
