We are seeking an experienced Principal Investment Risk Manager for our Equity Equivalent Investment Program EEIP to join our team and play a pivotal role in shaping the future of development financing in the region. As the Principal Investment Risk Manager, EEIP; you will be at the intersection of AWS's business strategy and our B-BBEE initiatives. Your expertise will be crucial in safeguarding investments while maximizing our transformative potential. Working with both senior internal leadership and external partners, you will shape the risk management framework that underpins our investments in small and medium enterprises.
Key job responsibilities
In this strategic role, you will drive excellence across several critical areas:
- Risk strategy and oversight: You will develop and implement comprehensive risk management strategies that protect our investments while supporting program objectives. This includes conducting thorough risk assessments, developing risk mitigation strategies, and ensuring alignment with both international financial reporting standards and local transformation and other regulatory requirements.
- Investment Analysis and Management: Your expertise will be essential in evaluating and monitoring private market investments. You will oversee the financial analyses conducted by fund managers, conduct stress testing, and provide strategic insights that inform investment decisions. This includes oversight of Fund Managers, Private Equity, and Private Debt strategies.
- Stakeholder Management: You will build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including internal teams, external funders, and investee companies. Your ability to communicate complex risk concepts clearly and influence decision-making at senior levels will be crucial.
- Innovation and Development: As trading and operating markets evolve, you will stay ahead of industry trends and regulatory changes, continuously improving our risk management approaches and adapting them to meet new challenges in the B-BBEE and private equity landscapes.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or related field
- Advanced credentials such as CFA, CIMA, or FRM
- Experience in private markets, including: Risk management and mitigation strategies in fund management. Working knowledge of various asset classes and fund structures. Demonstrated track record of progressive responsibility and measurable impact.
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong background in financial modelling and investment analysis
- Comprehensive knowledge of the South African and Sub-Saharan African private equity landscape
- Takes ownership of complex initiatives and delivers results
- Demonstrates consistently high judgment in high-stakes decisions
- Builds strong relationships across organizational and external stakeholder boundaries
- Communicates with clarity and impact at all levels
