In this highly collaborative role, you will work closely with a team of designers, researchers, engineers, and marketers who are driven to deliver innovative, human-centered solutions for the healthcare industry. You will be a part of a design team that is responsible for driving the vision for the future of Stryker products. Utilizing user-centered design principles and methodology, you will work with interdisciplinary teams to identify relevant insights and translate them into actionable design opportunities. The Principal Designer puts significant effort into leading and coaching teams on how to define the user experience, and product attributes that support the experience. The designer continues to advocate for the end user during a product’s development and drives activities to solicit end user feedback such as end user co-creation activities.
Senior Staff Industrial Designers demonstrate leadership by playing a dual role for the benefit of the teams they collaborate with.
+ The Principal Industrial Designer plans and facilitates Design Thinking activities to improve collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking of the cross functional teams they support. They motivate and coach teams on the rigor required to define plans and goals to create an exceptional user experience.
+ The Principal Industrial Designer leads concept exploration to drive relevant/contemporary product and service solutions to key market and business problems their team has identified as critical to the success of a project. The designer executes design work while coaching younger members of the team to innovate regarding the product architecture, key interaction elements and aesthetic direction for the product.
**KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:**
**Technical Responsibilities:**
+ Lead technical team members in research, design, development, modification and evaluation of modules, assemblies, or subsystems.
+ Apply advanced design theories, principles, and concepts across various products within business.
+ Translate user needs to design inputs/ specifications and produce system/architectural level layouts and platform designs.
+ Assess new technologies and capabilities (prototyping, testing, et.al.) for the organization.
+ Mentor and influence in correction of complex product design issues.
+ Navigate the Intellectual landscape for filings and protection.
+ Translate user needs to design inputs/ specifications and produce complex system level designs independently.
+ Lead all activities to define the ideal user experience to drive product feature content. Leverage design skill sets to document user experience design expectations.
+ Create product concepts, and effective user interaction strategies, to accomplish contemporary design and user experience goals.
+ Create product/interface mock-ups and prototyping specifically for user testing and co-creation events.
+ Plan, participate, and conduct research and studies to support product design decisions.
+ Leverage advanced/contemporary methods to define the aesthetic strategy for products. Leverage modern tools to move from a marketing narrative to a brand focused product design.
+ Conduct technology exploration and influence application in the business.
**Business Responsibilities:**
+ Possess an in-depth knowledge of the industry and competitive landscape.
+ Partner with customers, internal and external key opinion leaders to develop technical strategies that meet clinical needs.
+ Strategize and execute customer facing activities like voice of customer and customer centric design across the business.
+ Collaborate on Financial /business modeling and supports business reviews to validate a technical approach.
**Med Device Compliance:**
+ Mentor others as a business unit expert on the usage of industry standards, including design requirements and test strategies per applicable regulations.
+ Lead others to create and refine documentation of key design decisions. Collaborate with engineering leaders to assure design directions is properly documented.
+ Contribute to R&D procedures and development of industry standards working closely with cross-functional SMEs.
**General Responsibilities:**
+ Lead cooperative efforts with R&D, Quality, Manufacturing, Regulatory, Clinical, Marketing and Project Management to ensure project success. .
+ Lead and support team members to create or improve procedures, policies, processes, systems, and technology requirements.
+ Develop and utilize tools to enhance the company’s product/process development or performance.
+ Identify and implement design and process solutions and ensures they are sustained over time.
+ Lead and support complex product development for cross functional teams, influencing multiple technical areas of expertise.
+ Hold team accountable to deliver high quality results with passion, energy and drive to meet business priorities.
+ Mentor, develop and influence across the business, intentionally building divisional relationships.
**Technical Skills:**
+ Ability to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of industrial design practices and tools, design principles within a regulated environment.
+ Adept at applying knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes to product design.
+ Demonstrate competence in digital design tools, specifically CAD modeling.
+ Strong technical ability in creating digital models and technical descriptions to integrate design deliverables into engineering systems.
+ Ability to communicate moderate complex plans and technical information to team members.
**Preferred Skills** **/ Design tools:**
+ Mastery in all digital design tools provided by the design function.
+ Ability to teach/coach others on design thinking framework and methods.
+ In-depth knowledge of materials, manufacturing and processing methods and technologies to support complex product development.
+ Ability to communicate complex plans and technical information to team members.
**Certifications:**
+ Beneficial to have continued education regarding Design Thinking, User Experience Design and Design Leadership
**EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS**
+ Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, in Industrial Design or Masters in related discipline
+ 8+ years of work experience.
