Brief Description of PSU/School/Dept The PSU Center for Student Health and Counseling (SHAC) is a nationally accredited healthcare facility that offers medical, counseling, dental, and health promotion/education services to students of Portland State University. The center consists of over 100 clinical and administrative staff, and there are currently 16,800 students eligible to use SHAC services.

Health Promotion & Education, a unit of SHAC, provides a vital component of the healthcare continuum. Health promotion is a proactive approach to health care that stresses prevention using various strategies with the ultimate goal of keeping people well. The focus of health promotion rests in comprehensive community level interventions that are aimed to influence the environment in which people live, work and learn.This work is accomplished through health promotion programs (planned, organized events and activities that empower people over time to make informed decisions regarding their health) and health education (providing a health enhancing learning experience for individuals through workshops, classes, and individual sessions).
In addition, by advocating for policy change/development and organizational support, Health Promoters are key players in assisting communities along the path of optimal wellness.

Position Summary Under the supervision of the Director of Health Promotion and Education, the Prevention Coordinator will provide leadership and functional responsibility for the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of outreach and prevention efforts, which may include alcohol and drug programming, harm reduction, peer recovery, and stigma reduction as part of a comprehensive health promotion program operating with a health equity lens.

The Prevention Coordinator will: Design and conduct campus-wide prevention efforts using health promotion theory and student development theory, including but not limited to environmental management, social movement, policy development, or social norming. Demonstrate cultural competence and inclusiveness in working with populations of diverse cultures and identities in addressing issues of diversity, health, and social justice Collaborate with campus and community partners on initiatives, policies and research to develop a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to health promotion & prevention initiatives. Collaborate with on- and off-campus partners to enhance supportive services provided by SHAC’s Peer Recovery and Harm Reduction programs. Mobilize key collaborators for collective action to shift the campus culture and environment around stigma & prevention. Support a team of student staff to carry out prevention programming (suicide prevention, recovery support, substance use, and harm reduction). Participate in strategic planning, assessment and evaluation of Health Promotion efforts. Develop goals and measurable objectives for policies, programs, and services and evaluate effectiveness. Propose and manage specific program budgets. Aid in applying for future grants related to prevention.


Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in public health, health promotion, community health, social work, education, higher education administration, counseling, or closely related field with 4+ years of related experience in peer recovery, prevention, public health, health education, social work, counseling, or closely related field Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree in public health, health promotion, community health, social work, education, higher education administration, counseling, or closely related field with 2+ year of related experience in prevention, public health, health education, social work, counseling, or closely related field Experience in substance misuse prevention / intervention, and harm reduction with college students or young adults Experience in grant management and/or grant writing Key Cultural Competencies Create an environment that acknowledges, encourages, and celebrates differences. Work Days/Hours Fixed: M-F, 8am-5pm Total Compensation Range & Benefits Statement The starting salary rate for this position will be between $62,700 – $65,000. The starting salary may be negotiable above this range, however, it will be dependent upon the knowledge, experience, skills and abilities of the chosen candidate, the budget of the hiring department, and approval from HR.
