The Protein Engineering Team in the Research and Development group at Grifols Diagnostic Solutions is seeking a motivated protein biochemist to help develop novel protein production methods.
 
  
  
 
  
  
The Postdoctoral Scientist will perform innovative research and work collaboratively with other scientific team members within R&D to advance early research and high-risk projects through proof-of-concept. The Postdoctoral Scientist is expected to independently plan and drive projects, design and conduct experiments, maintain proper documentation, and effectively communicate within the onsite research team, across Grifols’ sites and research groups, and within the scientific community.
 
  
  
 
  
  
Project emphasis will be on developing new microbial protein secretion systems for proteins used in diagnostic assays. Simultaneously, this project will also focus on development of high-throughput capabilities for protein expression. This is a unique opportunity that provides industry experience in an R&D setting with potential to have a direct impact on human health. 
 
  
  
 
  
  
**Primary Responsibilities for Role:** 
 
  
  
+ Work collaboratively and productively as part of a team highlighting their individual contributions but also advancing the larger project scope. Includes working effectively with small core team and with functional teams within the larger research organization.
  
+ Investigating, developing, and establishing new methods and technologies for recombinant protein diagnostic and therapeutic production and characterization.
  
+ Designs, executes, and analyzes experiments. Collaborate effectively with colleagues across departments.
  
+ Provides regular updates to overseeing scientist(s) and other postdocs on status of experiments and studies.
  
+ Capable of planning multifaceted projects and incorporating multiple experimental approaches appropriately
  
+ Source and interpret literature, run database searches, plan and design experimental studies, execute and refine experiments, interpret and communicate findings
  
+ Presents research results to colleagues at scientific meetings, publishes scientific manuscripts and contributes to creation of Intellectual Property.
  
+ Maintains laboratory notebook and complies to scientific recordkeeping policies.
 
  
  
 
  
  
**Additional Responsibilities:** 
 
  
  
May supervise interns or lower-level lab technicians as needed.
 
  
  
 
  
  
**Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:** 
 
  
  
+ Working knowledge of molecular biology, protein design, biochemistry (purification of soluble and membrane proteins), protein characterization (DLS/MALS, HPLC, DSF, affinity and kinetic analysis, etc.), microscopy, tissue and hybridoma culture, monoclonal antibody discovery, and assay development including ELISA.
  
+ Knowledge and mass spectrometry and/or structural biology methods is highly desirable.
  
+ Trained in handling biohazardous and infectious samples. Exercises judgement and initiative in making project decisions.
  
+ Creativity and originality in experimental work is expected. Clear oral, verbal, and written communication is required.
  
+ Excellent interpersonal skills.
 
  
  
 
  
  
**Education:** 
 
  
  
Recently finished (< 1 year) or near completing (<3 months remaining) doctoral degree (PhD, MD or other) in applicable science, engineering, or medical field. 
 
  
  
 
  
  
**Experience:** 
 
  
  
0-2 years of experience in experimental laboratory post PhD

**Pay Scale**
  
The estimated pay scale for the Postdoctoral Scientist role based in Emeryville, California, is $100,107.50 to $125,133.75 per year. Additionally, the position is eligible to participate in up to 5% of the company bonus pool. Final compensation packages will ultimately depend on education, experience, skillset, knowledge, where the role is performed, internal equity and market data.
