Postdoc - Cryogenics Engineering Physics

Discover TRIUMF, Canada's particle accelerator centre. We are a publicly funded, not-for-profit research lab that is a hub for discovery and innovation.

Our mission is to serve as Canada’s particle accelerator centre.  We advance isotope science and technology, both fundamental and applied.  We collaborate across communities and disciplines, from nuclear and particle physics to the life and material sciences.  We discover and innovate, inspire and educate, creating knowledge and opportunity for all.

TRIUMF's diverse community of nearly 600 multidisciplinary researchers, engineers, technicians, tradespeople, staff, and students create a unique incubator for Canadian excellence, as well as a portal to premier global collaborations.  Fueling innovation and improving lives, we are committed to accelerating discovery and shaping a better world.

BASIC FUNCTION:

TRIUMF has developed cryogenic infrastructure including liquid nitrogen (LN2) storage and cryogenic transfer lines, three liquid helium (LHe) cryoplants supporting operations of two superconducting (SC) accelerators, helium liquefier-refrigerator providing LHe to 520 MeV Cyclotron cryopanels for cryopumping of hydrogen. Helium Recovery Facility (HRF) equipped with helium liquefier which recovers over 95% of helium used at various experimental stations.

This position will support engineering and R&D activities in the Cryogenics Group in an experienced role for both R&D and MRO activities. All engineering design will be performed under the direct supervision of a Professional Engineer registered in BC. The position implies work on improvements, developments and assistance to new projects and facilities which require cryogenic support. Cryogenics group also provides assistance to other groups, for ex. support of SRF department R&D program, etc.

MRO activities include assistance to MRO Cryogenic Expert with operation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of the vacuum, cryogenic and refrigeration equipment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Design, build, commissioning, and implementation of cryogenics and refrigeration infrastructure for new projects including preparation of design notes, specifications, schematic diagrams, etc.Cryogenics and refrigeration R&D for new projects and programs, including UCN.Specification, selection, pricing and procuring of major cryogenic and refrigeration equipment, receiving permits for installation and operation from Safety Authorities.Operation, MRO, refurbishing and improvements for cryogenics and refrigeration for the TRIUMF accelerator complex. This includes the driver accelerators: the 520 MeV cyclotron and the e-linac as well as ISAC-II linac.Contributing to international collaborations by writing technical papers, preparing presentations, etc.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
