Porter - PT
Barnes&Noble
A Barnes & Noble bookstore is a gathering place for readers and the community. As a Porter, you are an essential member of the bookstore team. You keep the store clean and tidy, creating a welcoming environment for all who shop in our stores. You are welcoming and kind to customers, always alert to their presence and helping them as you work throughout the store.
You’ll make a great Porter if you have what we term to be good “behaviors.” Expect your colleagues to demonstrate these behaviors and to hold you, and themselves, to high standards, and for your Store Managers to reinforce our expectations.
These behaviors collectively demonstrate that you:
• Maintain reliable and punctual attendance for scheduled shifts.
• Fill scheduling gaps when you are able, being flexible and responsive to the needs of the store — we are open from early mornings to late evenings every day, including weekends and most holidays.
• Are positive and willing in your approach to work, performing assigned cleaning, light duty and maintenance tasks with purpose and energy, working hard and reliably.
• Are supportive and considerate of colleagues, going out of your way to help others on the team and showing them kindness.
• Are always cheerful with customers, alert to their presence and consistently going out of your way to help them.
• Show aptitude and willingness to learn new skills and expand your knowledge of the store.
• Use cleaning products correctly and safely, following consistent sanitation procedures.
• Respond to weather factors affecting safety in the store; know and follow procedures to reduce accident risks.
• Know safe and effective use of tools; actively maintain acceptable standards of safety.
• Above all, show that you enjoy being a Porter!
As a Porter, you are part of a busy team and will be required to master the operational competencies required for the role.
You will be trained and expected to be proficient in:
• Maintaining a clean and safe entrance, storefront and exterior throughout the shift, including cleaning sidewalks, removing trash, sweeping and any other maintenance needs.
• Understanding Bookstore Basics 1-Presentation, working independently to keep the store clean and tidy.
• Maintaining restrooms, consistently monitoring and recognizing when to clean all areas, keeping them well-stocked with supplies, communicating about supply needs to the store team.
• Maintaining a safe and clean breakroom and all back of house areas, working well with the store team to do so consistently and independently.
• Supporting the Café by cleaning tables, bases, condiment area and removing trash, recognizing when to do this and working well with the café team to do so consistently and independently.
• Understanding health, safety and emergency procedures in the store, remaining alert to problematic behavior from members of the public and communicating issues to store team members promptly.
All this work requires physical activity which includes prolonged standing, repetitive bending, lifting and a lot of walking. You may work in other stores if you are able and this is needed, collaboratively supporting the wider Cluster.
As already said, above all we expect you to enjoy working at Barnes & Noble. You will, of course, comply with all company policies and procedures.
