Summary:
The Fisheries Policy Specialist plays a critical role in ensuring Pacific Seafood remains at the forefront of sustainable fisheries management, sustainability certification compliance, and industry advocacy. This position is responsible for tracking sustainability certifications, monitoring and influencing fisheries management decisions, and representing the company within key trade organizations. The position reports to the Vice President of Processing but will also work closely with the Public Affairs team. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, knowledgeable about fisheries policy and regulatory frameworks, and skilled in industry engagement.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Fisheries Policy & Management Council Engagement:
+ Monitor and analyze the activities of the North Pacific Fisheries Management Council (NPFMC) and the Pacific Fisheries Management Council (PFMC), tracking regulatory changes and identifying potential impacts on Pacific Seafood’s operations.
+ Attend council meetings, advisory panels, and subcommittee discussions to build relationships with policymakers and advocate for policies that support sustainable fisheries and industry stability.
+ Prepare internal reports and policy briefings, summarizing council discussions and regulatory developments to inform company leadership and cross-functional teams.
+ Engage with government agencies, scientific bodies, and industry partners to advocate for science-based fisheries management policies that align with Pacific Seafood’s business objectives.
2. Sustainability Certification Tracking & Engagement:
+ Manage and track Pacific Seafood’s sustainability certifications, including MSC (Marine Stewardship Council), RFM (Responsible Fisheries Management), and other third-party sustainability certifications relevant to our fisheries.
+ Work with internal teams to gather necessary data, complete audits, and maintain proper documentation.
+ Support new fishery certifications or client group participation, assisting in the evaluation and onboarding of additional sustainability programs as directed by the Distribution or Processing division heads.
3. Industry & Trade Organization Representation:
+ Represent Pacific Seafood in fisheries-related trade organizations, including industry working groups, sustainability coalitions, and advisory boards.
+ Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders including the Public Affairs Team to ensure alignment on fisheries policies and government relations initiatives.
+ Monitor and engage with emerging industry initiatives related to fisheries management, climate impact, and sustainability best practices, advising leadership on key trends and opportunities.
+ Ensuring Pacific Seafood is well-represented in key forums and discussions related to fisheries policies that impact our business.
4. Research & Policy Development:
+ Conduct research and analysis on fisheries policy, regulatory changes, and sustainability trends to inform Pacific Seafood’s strategic approach to fisheries management.
+ Develop position statements, white papers, and advocacy materials to support the company’s engagement with policymakers and industry stakeholders.
+ Collaborate with external consultants, trade groups, and scientific advisors to stay ahead of regulatory shifts and ensure Pacific Seafood remains proactive in fisheries policy discussions.
What you Bring to Pacific Seafood:
Required:
+ Bachelor’s degree in fisheries science, environmental policy, natural resource management, or a related field (advanced degree preferred).
+ 2-5 years of experience in fisheries management, regulatory affairs, sustainability certifications, or industry advocacy.
+ Strong knowledge of U.S. fisheries management structures, including the Magnuson-Stevens Act and fisheries council processes.
+ Experience with sustainability certifications (MSC, RFM, etc.), including reporting requirements.
+ Excellent research, writing, and communication skills, with the ability to translate complex policy issues into clear, actionable insights.
+ Ability to travel for council meetings, industry conferences, and trade organization events as needed.
Preferred:
+ Existing relationships with members of the NPFMC or PFMC
+ Experience working for a seafood company.

+ Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
Salary Range: $96,500- 112,500 annually
