Position Summary The Value Chain Optimization (VCO) team has an opening for a Planning & Optimization Engineer. This role is in Anacortes, WA and reports through the VCO organization. This posting is specifically for the Refinery Operations Coordinator. This position ensures refinery production strategies and shipment plans are guided by economic priorities. The ROC focuses on optimizations and refinery/commercial issues dealing with scheduling and supply coordination. The ROC seeks to capitalize on opportunities as related to production plans. The ROC works closely with multiple departments and organizations to execute strategies and optimize production. VCO views this role as a knowledge-enhancing role for an employee seeking to learn commercial economics and planning. The role will begin by cross-training on coordinating/scheduling desks and then progress into learning APS and forecasting deliverables and cadence. This role will progress into learning the PIMS LP model as dictated by department needs. This role provides the candidate with key economic, planning, and logistics knowledge that will equip the individual for future refining or commercial roles. This position reports directly to the Economics and Planning Manager. This individual will gain a more holistic perspective of Marathon profitability and engage in cross-functional interaction with the Clean Products team, Crude and Feedstocks team, Marketing, Refining, and MPLX. The candidate will also broaden their knowledge base concerning West Coast market dynamics and total value chain optimization. The key characteristics to be successful in this role are communication, critical thinking, drive for results, and adaptability. Key Responsibilities + Develops optimized and executable production plans for a single refinery using economic principles and AspenTech suite scheduling and forecasting tools. + Modifies production plans as needed to adjust to demand/margin changes. Works closely with the prompt forecaster and coordinators to ensure refinery production plan is optimized. + Identifies constraints associated with refinery modeling, uses provided input to develop refinery plans. Improves upon refinery scheduling and planning tools. + Optimizes refinery plans and shipment schedules by coordinating with refinery schedulers and Commercial. + Assists in developing decision-making frameworks and presenting findings to stakeholders. + Coordinates LPG feedstock purchases, planning and communicates with LPG commercial team to optimize movements and purchase plans. + As assigned, optimizes production plans around major maintenance and turnarounds. + Demonstrates a fundamental understanding of refinery operations, economics, and market dynamics. Develops and communicates strategies that capture missed opportunities and closes production optimization gaps. + Assists in collaboration meetings with the value chain to discuss both local and regional economic drivers. + Performs routing forecasting deliverables including economic evaluations, forecast submittals, and refinery communications. + Understands local refinery deliverables and can effectively manage with support of others. Understands how scheduling tools/processes work and is trained on APS to develop local refinery plans. Education and Experience + Bachelor’s degree in Engineering is required. + Three (3) years relevant experience. Technical Services or Economics & Planning experience preferred.
