JOB SUMMARY
An ophthalmologist working at WhidbeyHealth is proficient in diagnosing and treating eye disease, performing eye surgery, and providing comprehensive vision care.
PRINCIPLE FUNCTIONS includes the following, other duties may be assigned:
Clinical care
Conduct comprehensive eye examinations and vision tests to diagnose and assess a wide range of eye and vision disorders. Evaluate eye-related health symptoms, take detailed patient medical histories, and develop appropriate treatment plans. Diagnose and treat common and complex conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and eye infections. Prescribe and administer medications, including topical and systemic therapies, to treat ophthalmic conditions. Prescribe and fit corrective lenses, including eyeglasses and contact lensesSurgical procedures
Perform corrective and advanced surgical procedures to treat eye diseases, injuries, and conditions. These can include: Cataract surgery Glaucoma surgery Corneal repair and transplants Refractive surgery, such as LASIK Retinal repair Oculoplastic and reconstructive surgery Perform laser surgery to alter, remove, or reshape ocular tissue.Patient Management
Educate patients on maintaining healthy vision and managing their eye conditions. Provide or direct post-operative care and monitor patients following surgeries or other treatments. Refer patients for more specialized treatment when a condition falls outside their specific subspecialty or scope of practice. Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team, including optometrists, ophthalmic technicians, and nurses.Administrative and academic duties
Document and evaluate patient medical histories and treatment plans. Order, perform, and interpret the results of diagnostic or clinical tests, such as retinal imaging and optical coherence tomography (OCT). Instruct and supervise medical students, interns, and residents in ophthalmologic procedures (optional) Conduct or participate in clinical research to advance knowledge in the field. (optional)JOB KNOWLEDGE & QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Graduate of an accredited United States or Canadian medical school; Doctor of Medicine, MD or Doctor of Osteopathic, DO. Satisfactory completion of an accredited American or Canadian one (1) year clinical internship followed by a minimum of three (3) year ophthalmology residency program. Optional: One (1) or two (2) year fellowship to subspecialize in a specific area such as glaucoma, retina, or pediatrics.Training and Experience
Surgical precision and dexterity: Possess exceptional hand-eye coordination for delicate surgical procedures. Medical and diagnostic knowledge: Have an expert understanding of the anatomy, function, and diseases of the eye. Critical thinking and problem-solving: Evaluate complex symptoms and make quick, sound decisions regarding diagnosis and treatment. Communication and empathy: Clearly explain diagnoses and procedures to patients and provide compassionate care, especially for those experiencing vision loss or anxiety. Attention to detail: Accurately monitor and record patient information and perform meticulous work. Resilience and time management: Handle high-stress emergencies, long-term care cases, and the demands of balancing clinic time, surgery, and administrative tasks.Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Current professional licensure in Washington State required. Active unrestricted DEA license required. Salary Range: $325-$375,000 Annual
