+ Provide comprehensive medical care to incarcerated individual, ensuring their physical and mental health, and addressing any health-related needs that may arise during their time in custody.
Job Duties and Other Information
Examine, diagnose, and treat illnesses and injuries, similar to their roll in other health care settings.
Provide comprehensive primary care, including preventative care, health maintenance, and management of acute and chronic conditions. Collaborate with other healthcare professionals, including nurses, physician assistants, and mental health specialist to ensure comprehensive care. Work with corrections staff to ensure safety and security of the facility.

Better Hours, Better Pay, and Less Stress
Our Correctional health care staff works a steady schedule of 40 hours per week and shares on-call, with 90% being outpatient work as a primary care provider between the hours of 8:00 AM and 4:30 PM, Mondays through Fridays. Louisiana is proud to offer state employees competitive pay based on experience. In Corrections, there is no haggling with insurance companies and social security tax is never withheld from salary. Employees who work beyond their normal hours are compensated for their time in the form of overtime pay or compensation time.
Strong Teams and a Stimulating, Flexible Work Environment
DPS&C/LSP health care staff experience a variety of diseases and conditions that are often not seen in private practice. Our physicians receive full malpractice insurance at no cost and a robust network of specialty providers and hospitals, mainly through Louisiana State University Health Care Network. The DPS&C/LSP provides for job flexibility so that staff can work outside of state employment in compliance with approved civil service rules.
Generous Benefits, Time Off, and Retirement Plans
Being a state employment comes with an excellent benefit package. Employees can choose from a selection of health insurance plans, dental and vision insurance plans, life insurance plans, and disability insurance. Employees with 1 year or less of state service receive 12 days of vacation leave annually and all full-time employees earn 12 sick days per year. Additionally, there are 10 guaranteed paid government holidays throughout the calendar year. Employees who request time off but lack vacation days or compensation time may still receive time off in the form of leave without pay. State employees conclude their years of service with a generous retirement plan through Louisiana State Employees' Retirement System.
