The Physical Security Threat and Incident Manager is a vital role within the Bank’s Corporate Security team, focused on managing physical security incidents and crisis responses, as well as implementing a behavioral threat assessment program. This position is responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive Workplace Violence Prevention (WPV) and Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management (BTAM) program for M&T Bank. This role serves as a key point of contact during physical security-related emergencies, coordinating response efforts and ensuring effective communication between various stakeholders.
The role is dedicated to fostering a safe work environment by proactively identifying, assessing, and mitigating potential physical security and workplace violence threats to individuals, assets, and operations. It involves analyzing information from various sources to determine the credibility and severity of threats, coordinating appropriate responses to mitigate risks, and collaborating with the Bank’s Crisis Management and Enterprise Resilience teams to develop procedures for responding to critical incidents such as civil unrest and workplace violence.
This position ensures the safety and security of employees, customers, and operations through proactive threat identification, risk mitigation, and effective crisis response.
Location: This role is based in Buffalo, NY. Open to considering candidates out of one M&T's main hubs within our footprint, but preference will be given to candidates based in Buffalo or who are willing to relocate.
Primary Responsibilities:Develop comprehensive Workplace Violence Prevention and Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management program including prevention methodologies, policy and procedural development, data collection and analysis, post-incident engagement strategy and training awareness/education campaigns aimed at reporting, reducing and/or mitigating threats in the workplace.Manage the risk evaluation of workplace violence incidents and behaviors of concern, in partnership with other key stakeholders (i.e., Legal, Human Resources, Regional Security Leads, Local Law Enforcement, etc.).Provide subject matter guidance to divisional, regional, business-line leadership and Bank branch managers regarding prevention of or response to incidents of targeted threats and violence.Identify and assess workplace violence incidents and behaviors of concern, providing mitigation recommendations for highly complex problems.Develop processes for and lead a Behavioral Threat Assessment Team inclusive of a variety of internal stakeholder groups (i.e., Legal, Human Resources, Communications, Business Resiliency, and Employee Relations), to assess threats made to the Bank and its employees.In conjunction with the Bank’s Crisis Management function, lead the planning, coordination, and execution of crisis response efforts for physical security incidents across the bank’s footprint.Develop and maintain physical security critical incident management and emergency response plans and partnership with the Bank’s Crisis Management Team for tabletop exercises.Strive to identify new opportunities and solutions that will aid in the mitigation of threats and identify and address behaviors of concern in the workplace.Conduct sensitive interviews of impacted employees, victims, witnesses, and persons of interest during a threat related investigation, both virtually and in-person.Coordinate incident reporting and appropriate follow-up with law enforcement authorities regarding threats of violence in the workplace.Provide real-time situational awareness and briefings to executive leadership during critical physical security events, in conjunction with the Crisis Management team.Identify and manage threats to employees from external individuals or groups, such as disgruntled customers, former employees, or other third parties.Document investigative results in an articulate manner utilizing case management software to ensure accurate reporting, tracking and documentation of the incident.Maintain excellent rapport and open lines of communication regarding requests for support, service issues, and deliverables with senior leaders.Understand and adhere to the Company’s risk and regulatory standards, policies and controls in accordance with the Company’s Risk Appetite. The position requires comprehensive, demonstrated experience and expertise in physical security related crisis and/ or incident management and conducting threat assessment reviews while developing programs that train a diverse workforce on Workplace Violence Prevention methodologies and strategies. Travel within the Bank’s footprint is required to perform job duties.
No supervisory responsibilities. Coordinates effort and may provide work leadership to attain program goals.
Education and Experience Required:Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, psychology, emergency management, crisis communications, security studies, or a related field and a minimum of 5 years’ relevant work and/or military experience, or in lieu of a degree, a combined minimum of 9 years’ relevant work and/or military experience inclusive of a minimum of 5 years’ relevant work and/or military experience.Demonstrated sound judgment and independent decision-making skills.Experience conducting sensitive investigations and managing confidential information.Demonstrated empathy in dealing with victims of a high impact situation (ie: Bank Robbery, Domestic Violence, Domestic Terrorism or other critical incidents).Strong oral and written communication skills to influence at all levels of the organizationDemonstrated ability to assess the validity and severity of workplace violence related threats and/or implications of such.Education and Experience Preferred:Advanced degree preferred.Minimum of 7 years’ work experience in corporate security, emergency management, intelligence, social work, psychology, victim organizations, law enforcement and/or military police specializing in workplace violence prevention or threat assessment, review, reporting and/or response related deliverables.Prior experience leading or contributing to the development of a Behavioral Threat Assessment Team in a corporate environment.Certified Threat Manager (CTM) accredited by the Association of Threat Assessment Professionals.Demonstrated experience as a senior-level, Corporate Security professionalAdditional professional certifications (e.g., CPP, PSP, or CEM).Certification in and proven history of effectively engaging in interviewing techniques (Reid Technique of Interviewing and Interrogation Certification, etc.).Prior experience with structured professional judgment tools to assess threatsStrong ability to active decisively.Experience communicating directly and diplomatically with various levels of leadershipExperience understanding and analyzing complex business problems and making sound decisions and recommendations.M&T Bank is committed to fair, competitive, and market-informed pay for our employees. The pay range for this position is $85,104.04 - $141,840.07 Annual (USD).
