The Opportunity:
The Optical and Photonics Systems group of CACI is looking for candidates to help develop the next generation of optical technologies.  These include free-space optical communications terminals and modems and high-power optical sources across the optical spectrum.  Particularly, efforts will develop the next generation of capabilities, with previous successes having flown on the International Space Station as part of an optical communications relay demonstration and another having achieved the current largest data optical transmission range of >19 million miles, along with developing the Space Defense Agency’s standard terminal for laser communications.

This position is contingent upon contract award.

Responsibilities:

Reliability Assessment: Apply the concepts of physics of failure and accelerated test methods to evaluate reliability of photonic/optical devices at the system, sub-system, and component level.

Components Testing and Qualification: Responsible for optical component characterization and qualification testing to ensure compliance to environments requirements and customer specifications. Conduct and/or coordinate off-site testing as needed at specialized test facilities, including radiation, shock and vibration.

PMP Expertise: Utilize deep knowledge of Part, Materials, and Process (PMP) to ensure compliance with space application standards.

Documentation: Prepare detailed documentation, including test procedures and test reports, failure analysis reports, and reliability assessments.

Testing Software Development: Specify and coordinate the development of software tools for instrument control, data collection and data analysis.

Failure Analysis: Lead the development and management of the failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA). Coordinate with the component development teams to ensure component design FMEAs are complete, accurate and updated.

Qualifications:

Required:

US Citizenship required

Master’s Degree in physics, optics, materials or related engineer/science field, and a minimum of 5 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education, skills, and experience

Familiarity with laser technology and optical fiber components

Working knowledge of Weibull reports, design review and control; prediction, estimation, and reliability distribution methodology; failure mode effects and analysis; and the analysis of reliability testing and field failures.

Familiarity with optical components and system testing equipment, including laser source, OSA, power meter, PER meter.

Ability to develop automation software for instrument control and data collection/data analysis using LabVIEW/Python/MATLAB

Well-developed organization skills, including the ability to handle many details and multiple programs simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.

Motivated, team-oriented individual with strong problem-solving abilities

Willingness to travel: Up to 20% domestic travel
