Job Description
The primary role of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.
ResponsibilitiesPerform blood draws and label specimens accurately.Centrifuge specimens and record maintenance data.Decontaminate areas and update patient information.Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.Clearly explain the process of venipuncture and specimen collection to patients.Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.Fully understand and execute all physicians' orders.Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.Ensure accuracy by checking all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts.Package specimens for transport and store them according to required temperatures.Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.Attend annual departmental training sessions.Handle telephone inquiries and read laboratory results as needed.Essential SkillsExperience in blood draws, venipuncture, and specimen collection.Must have hard stick experience.2 years of experience in healthcare and customer service.Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, if required.Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.Additional Skills & QualificationsHigh School Diploma or GED.Work Environment
The work environment is a fast-paced lab or hospital setting. The location is fairly large and handles high-volume accounts, with the daily requirement of 30-40 draws. Phlebotomists are expected to stand for most of their shift and deal primarily with geriatric patients, comprising 90% of the clientele. The role involves working both independently and as part of a team. Training is provided in the first week. The work hours are Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm. Candidates will need to pay for parking, which can be expensed as long as receipts are kept.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $24.00/hr.
