Job Description
The primary role of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various duties, troubleshooting issues, providing training, and making workflow recommendations.
ResponsibilitiesPerform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, and record maintenance data.Decontaminate and update patient information as needed.Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.Clearly explain the process of venipuncture and other specimen collection methods to patients.Demonstrate proficiency with straight needles and butterfly needles.Understand and follow all physicians' orders.Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.Verify test requisitions or computer labels against scripts for accuracy.Package specimens for transport and store them at the required temperature.Follow procedures to maintain specimen integrity during transport.Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.Attend annual department training sessions.Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to address inquiries.Essential SkillsProficiency in phlebotomy and blood drawing.Experience with specimen collection and handling.Knowledge of geriatrics and customer service skills.1-2 years of experience in blood drawing.Experience working in a fast-paced environment.High School Diploma or GED.Additional Skills & QualificationsExperience with Epic (EMR) is highly desirable.Geriatric experience is preferred.CPT certification is beneficial.Work Environment
This position is primarily at an IOP, working with geriatric patients from Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM. The site is very busy, with up to 25-30 patients per day and involves challenging blood draws. There may be a need to travel to the nearby Manassas PSC for additional hours.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $24.00/hr.
