Job Description
The primary role of the phlebotomist is to efficiently perform various duties including troubleshooting, training, and providing workflow recommendations. The position involves drawing blood, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, and updating patient information, among other tasks.
ResponsibilitiesPerform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, and record maintenance data.Decontaminate equipment and update patient information.Collect and store specimens following established procedures.Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection processes clearly and courteously.Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles.Fully comprehend physicians' orders.Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by the test order.Ensure test requisitions or computer labels match scripts with 100% accuracy.Package specimens for transport and store them at the required temperature.Place samples in appropriate containers, accurately label, and follow procedures to maintain specimen integrity.Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.Attend annual department trainings.Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.Essential SkillsValid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment.Minimum of 6 months' experience performing venipunctures in a lab or hospital setting.Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.High School Diploma or GED.2-4 years of experience in related field.Additional Skills & QualificationsExperience with pediatric and geriatric patients.Ability to conduct 50-60 draws daily depending on the site.Work Environment
The work environment includes covering IOP and PSC locations, which are large size and high volume. The role requires standing most of the time and walking to patients' rooms to draw blood. Depending on the location, the phlebotomist may work in a team setting or independently. Training will be provided at Winston-Salem PSC and includes two weeks of hands-on experience.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr.
