Job Description

This position involves working in Norfolk, specializing in oncology patients. Due to the nature of these patients, drawing blood may be more challenging as their veins are less prominent. The role includes performing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data, and decontaminating, while updating patient information.

ResponsibilitiesConduct blood draws, labeling, and centrifuging specimens.Record maintenance data and decontaminate equipment.Collect and store specimens following established procedures.Explain venipuncture and specimen collection processes clearly and courteously.Demonstrate techniques using straight and butterfly needles.Understand and follow all physician orders.Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes; label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required.Check test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure accuracy.Package specimens for transport and store them at the required temperature.Follow protocols to maintain specimen integrity during transport.Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.Wear appropriate attire including personal protective equipment.Attend annual department trainings.Respond to telephone inquiries and read laboratory results as needed.Perform other duties as assigned.Essential SkillsPhlebotomy certification.Experience in high volume blood draws.Hospital or practice setting experience.At least 3+ years of phlebotomy experience.Knowledge of standard phlebotomy procedures including order of draw.High School Diploma or GED.Work Environment

This is a very high volume facility, averaging 400 blood draws a day. It provides opportunities for growth and upward mobility in a well-known organization. Schedule is weekdays only, 8:00am - 5:00pm.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $17.00 - $25.00/hr.
