The Pharmacy Technician Inpatient – Oncology is located at Taussig Cancer Center and supports ambulatory cancer services. Caregivers in this role work closely with pharmacy technicians, pharmacists, pharmacy leadership, and other caregivers across the care team. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals looking to invest in a long-term pharmacy career, as the department provides exposure to oncology and general inpatient pharmacy operations with opportunities for cross-training in additional areas. A day in this role focuses on learning and supporting oncology pharmacy services, including delivering medications throughout Taussig Cancer Center, working the carousel, and triaging needs by answering phones and managing the MAR message system to support caregivers on the floors.

A caregiver in this role will work variable hours, Monday through Friday from 7:00am to 3:30pm, 8:30am to 5:00pm, 10:30am to 7:00pm. Weekend requirements are Saturday/Sunday from 7:00am to 3:30pm, rotating every 4th weekend.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

Prepare medications through selecting, labeling, repacking, non-sterile compounding and sterile compounding.  Deliver medications to the appropriate storage locations in an accurate and timely manner. Maintain accurate and appropriate inventories of medications and supplies and complete inventory audits, such as cycle counts and nursing unit inspections.  Maintain a safe and clean work area by complying with procedures, rules and regulations, and document regulatory requirements such as temperature logs, scheduled activities and training.  Use information systems, technology and automation to complete assigned tasks.  Assist with the training of pharmacy caregivers and students. 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:   

High School Diploma/GED   Understanding of algebraic calculations necessary for the preparation of extemporaneous compounds    

Must meet all of the following license and certification combination requirements at the time of application:

Must be a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) OR the National HealthCareer Association (NHA)AND it is required to hold an active registration through the Ohio Board of Pharmacy (OBOP) as either a Certified Pharmacy Technician, Registered Pharmacy Technician, or Pharmacy Technician Trainee.  If certified but current status with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy (OBOP) is Registered Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacy Technician Trainee it is required to update registration status to a Certified Pharmacy Technician with the OBOP within six months of hire.Please note: A status as a Pharmacy Technician Trainee with OBOP does not qualify for this role.  However, please visit the apprenticeship program to express interest: https://talentcommunity.clevelandclinic.org/campaign/apprentiship-programs/ )

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:    

Completion of a formal pharmacy technician training programSix months of hospital experience   Prior experience in oncology

Physical Requirements:

Typical physical demands include ability to perform the job while standing, walking, reaching, stretching and sitting for prolonged periods; manual dexterity sufficient to perform computer, dispensing, and compounding.
