JOB SUMMARY:
Adheres to Hospital’s Policies and Procedures and Philosophy of Care. Performs a variety of technical and clinical duties involved in providing medication to patients in a safe and timely manner. Drug distribution duties include ensuring the timely and quality delivery of medications, processing new orders and stat orders to meet predetermined standards. Team responsibilities include quality improvement, unit inspections with data collection from patient charts. Performs duties only under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist and does not perform any duties that can legally only be performed by a registered pharmacist.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE; CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE :
High school graduate or equivalent with a minimum of two years of college or technical training in a certified pharmacy technician training program; maintain licensure as required by State of Washington .
SPECIAL EQUIPMENT, SKILLS OR OTHER REQUIREMENTS :
Ability to use telephone, computer, printer, calculator, fax machine, copy machine, Pyxis, delivery carts and IV hood. Must be able to perform aseptic technique, by passing a yearly competency. Must be able to read and follow instructions. Must be able to organize efficiently the team's function. Good interpersonal and communication skills.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND HAZARDS :
Adheres to all State and Federal regulations pertaining to hazardous materials and BBP. May be exposed to labeled hazardous substances. May need to lift up to 40lbs in IV solutions.
WORK CONTACT GROUP : All employees, physicians, registered nurses and visitors.
SPECIAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS :
Stands and walks for most of the working day. Must be able to maintain a rigorous schedule of lifting, bending and carrying.
SUPERVISED BY : Pharmacy Director.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/ TECHNICAL
+ Fills Pyxis machines accurately and documents problems.
+ Maintains integrity of pharmacy stock, including review of expiration dates, rotation of stock, and maintenance of appropriate par level.
+ Performs/coordinates unit inspections in patient care areas on a monthly basis; documents and communicates problems to Nurse Manager of the area involved, and Pharmacy Director.
+ Ensures the timeliness of distributive functions to Pyxis machines including filling of new orders, and STAT orders, according to predetermined deadlines and refills according to predetermined schedule.
+ Restocks crash carts, emergency boxes and floor stock in a timely manner.
+ Prepares intravenous admixtures or other sterile preparations (including TPN) accurately.
+ Maintains integrity and cleanliness of USP 797 approved sterile preparation room.
+ Solves problems when possible, or communicates information to the appropriate person for resolution.
+ Assists with inventory management through routine ordering, receiving, unpacking and storing of medications and supplies through approved contracts with regard to costs and communicates problems with Manager.
+ Repackages bulk medications in unit dose packages accurately.
+ Performs patient billing and departmental charges in a timely manner.
+ Maintains logs, records and other required documentation accurately.
+ Participates in quality assurance data collection, including reviewing charts and other data, and completing necessary documentation.
+ Participates in the planning, organization, operation and evaluation of the distributive services of the department.
+ Documents all problems dealing with distributive functions, noting a description of the incident, those involved and action taken.
+ Maintains cleanliness, orderliness, and professional atmosphere of work areas through efficient use of available space.
+ Participates in the quality improvement process of the department through problem identification, communication, and problem solving.
+ Adheres to guidelines established for control and documentation of controlled substances.
+ Participates in required and voluntary continuing education in an effort to reach professional and departmental goals.
+ Maintains knowledge of all current policies and procedures, including but not limited to, hazardous waste disposal, emergency procedures, fire safety, and infection control/universal guidelines.
+ Communicates with Manager in an accurate and timely fashion about departmental activities that affect the hospital or department.
+ Provides orientation to nursing services to pharmacy services including Pyxis, medication delivery, policies and procedures.
+ Supports and participates in an atmosphere of teamwork and cooperation, taking pride in providing excellent service in the care of patients.
+ Maintains strict confidentiality of patient, visitor and employee information complying with HIPAA Privacy Rules standards.
+ Performs other duties as assigned by Pharmacists .
This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between EvergreenHealth Monroe and United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW), Local 3000.
